You don't break a puppy from nursing - the dam weans her puppies. At 4 weeks, you should be offering the puppy a good quality dry puppy food, moistened with warm water, 3 - 4 times a day. Put it in a flat dish and guide the puppy towards the food. Puppies also need fresh water available at this time. Most dams will have their puppies totally weaned by about 6 weeks.

Between 3 and 4 weeks, puppies should begin accepting fine textured solid foods. By four and a half to five and a half weeks the puppy should be weaned. Purchase some cans of gourmet cat or dog food in chicken and beef flavors and smear a bit on the roof of the puppy’s mouth. It will soon get the idea. Do not feed it fish flavored foods or it will become a fussy eater. This is the same time you should begin to offer formula in a bowel. The earlier puppies eat on their own the better. I do not suggest baby foods because they are too low in calcium and vitamins. Although many puppies will eat as early as four weeks, some take an additional two or three weeks before they express interest in solid food. As soon as puppy chow is offered, keep a dish of water available. By the time the pup is 10 weeks old it should be receiving puppy chow dry.

The mother of the dog will know when the time is right. When the puppies start to seem to much for her, to demanding, you should start them on solid food. When she starts avoiding them when they want to nurse, have the solid food ready.

Are you keeping him? If so just let Mom wean him. She will start weaning him around 4 weeks by herself and by 7-8 weeks he could live without her if he has to. It certainly doesn't hurt to just let him nurse as long as she will allow it if you are keeping him though. I have seen them still nursing for comfort when they are almost a year old. It's not a food thing, just for comfort if Mom allows it.

You shouldn't have to. The mom will do it herself usually.
