I'm thinking of being a pediatrician, but I want a large family. At least 4 kids, but I've always wanted 6 =] I'm not quite sure of the schedules of pediatricians, whether they're on call or work A LOT and whatnot. Do you think it's possible to be a pediatrician but still spend some time with the kids? It makes a lot of money too which of course is always good but I don't want to if I'll NEVER get to see my kids! =/ Thanks

Being a pediatrician does NOT mean you have to be in private practice! You can be an Emergency Room peidatrician, or a NICU pediatrician, or a research pediatrician, the list can go on!

Do lots of research and talk to other pediatricians to find out how they balance professional life with home life.

The two pediatricians our family uses have 4+ children each. They still manage to give their family and their practice appropriate attention.

What they do, is work in the office three days a week (each)-with each having two days a week off. Both of them are in the office on the same day only once a week. Since they started the practice, they added another doctor (he also has a large family) that we have seen on occasion and a couple of others that we do not know. This allows them to alternate days on call, and works out well for them and I like the set up.

There is such a wide variety in how you can work. You just have to find what will work for you.

I wish you the best!

EDITED TO ADD: Perhaps you can discuss your questions with your pediatrician, I am sure s/he would be happy to answer them for you!

That depends on whether you work in a hospital or private practice. There are private practice doctors who work Monday through Friday 9 - 5 (maybe some a bit longer). You can be a parent and a pediatrician, but consider that no matter how much money you make, the more children you have the less money you have.

My pediatrician is on call but there are 4 Dr's in the office so they take turns but someone is on call every night from 5-9 and every weekend. So he is probably on call at least one night a wk and once every 4rth weekend. That's not too bad, I guess. My husband is on call (not a Dr) once every 4rth weekend and It doesnt sound bad but it seems to interfere with so many things we want to do! But... he also dont get paid near as much as a Doc!!

A kinfolk regular practitioner is super if your baby is healthful and frequently arising! i could say commence out with your regular practitioner, and turn on condition which you're able to desire to. My son all began with our regular practitioner, and that i enjoyed him being there. He have been given extremely extremely unwell early on and the wellbeing center switched him to a pediatrician for us. I enjoyed how our kinfolk regular practitioner is on call each and every of the time, and how he even met us in his workplace on a Sunday afternoon, and then lower back till now the workplace opened day after at present. the experts of the pediatrician so a approaches have been, that if there's a extensive situation that sends you to the wellbeing center, they are in a position to fulfill you there. in any different case, you're able to easily would desire to take whoever is available (in case you're no longer already seeing a ped). Our ped. has Saturday hours that are advantageous -- our kinfolk regular practitioner would not have that. different than that, i in my opinion have not seen a extensive distinction. i in my opinion choose the kinfolk regular practitioner and am attempting to get my husband to enable me swap our son back.

choose one or the other, if you don't think you can handle it, then you'll need to open a practice of your own, and control your own schedule. don't have ER hours. it'll limit your income, but you'll have time with your kids. you are on call if a child gets sick or injured. first, you have to get into Med school, and get the grades. you still sound young, and have plenty of time. after med school, and the 4 years of internship, you might not want all those kids. BUT, if that's what you want, you can do anything you put your mind to. good luck.

I don't think my ped is on call much, if ever. She has at least one kid, though, and breastfed, so I'm guessing she had to have been able to spend some time with her child =)
