I hate making small talk with the woman cutting my hair. I sit there and dont say anything. I figure if she dosent want to intiate the conversation then i wont speak. I have nothing to say anyway. Do you think that this is ignorant? I just like to get my hair cut and leave and not make small talk. Do you think shes thinking badly of me if i dont talk a lot?

It is not ignorant.

I think of it as giving the hairdresser a break.

I'm sure that sometimes they wouldn't mind if all they did was cut your hair and only speak to each other when needed.

I've done that a few times and we both didn't feel like we needed to have any type of conversation.

I'm just like you in this way. I try to make the effort to communicate a little bit, but for the most part, I just want to get it cut and get out of there w/out having to talk much.

Guess that's why I only go get it cut by someone once a year (I trim it the rest of the year, myself - but I'm a woman, so I can get away with long hair), but if you're a guy, I guess you'd have to get it cut more often than I would.

I don't really have advice for you (if I did, I'd know what to do myself, lol), but wanted to let you know you're not alone in feeling like this...

Yeah, I always find it awkward talking to the hairdresser. I'm sure she understands that some people are just more shy. Hairdressers usually strike up the conversations, and if she doesn't, then don't worry about it. I mean she's getting paid by you, so I doubt she thinks badly of you.

If you feel like she has a bad attitude just say something simple. Compliment her on something she's wearing, or ask how long she has been a hairdresser for. If she responds enthusiastically then you know she expects you to talk and would think its ignorant if you don't. However if she gives a ho hum answer and then is quiet again then she must not like to talk either and you can put your unease to rest.

No, if you are polite then no.

I'm usually very quiet when I get my hair done. Of course, I talk on occasion, but for the most part I'm just quiet

Just tell her up front that you are not much of a talker and you'd rather just watch your being cut.I too don't care to make a lot of small talk.
