You are likely referring to mats, which can be painful to the cat. Just take a strand of your hair, twist it up tightly, and realize how it feels pulling on your scalp.

You need to either take him to a groomer, or you can cut them out yourself. There are mat cutters sold, but they can be pricey and if your cat doesn't cooperate, it is wasted money. But you want to make sure you do not cut him, and it has to be quick and safe. So a cheap and safe item to use is sold at office supply stores. The blade is protected, and the point can poke through a mat and then you slice it away. I have posted a link of what I am referring to. It just takes some patience and a little bit at a time. Once he understands what you are doing, and feels better with the mats reduced, he will likely cooperate better.

It can't be mange because that's where the cat's fur falls out.

What you have is matted fur, and detangling that is almost impossible. Don't try to cut it out yourself, you can slice up their skin really badly doing that even if you're careful.

Check to see if there are any groomers nearby, the phone book helps. Call and ask if they do cats. Small jobs like this are about $4. The coat will grow back in in a month, to a month and a half. If there are no groomers, call a nearby vet and ask if the technician can shave out a matt for you on the cat. Some do it for free, others charge a small fee. If the technician does it it's often free, the vet themselves won't do this unless there's also an exam to be done or some other work on the cat.

Why on earth would you allow a longhaired cat to free roam? "Never had good hygiene"? Longhaired cats aren't meant to be subject to the dirt and debris from the outdoors. They also can't do all the grooming themselves. YOU should be combing this cat. Brushes should NEVER be used on a longhaired cats because they do little to remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and pull out and break the topcoat hairs. This cat should be combed weekly if he has a light undercoat and every other day all year long if he has a thick undercoat. No - putting conditioner on him and bathing him will make the mats WORSE. The water will make the mats tighten. If they can't be combed out then take him to a groomer experienced with cats or your vet and have them clipped out. And MOVE HIM INDOORS where he belongs so his coat doesn't get filthy. If you can't do that then rehome him with someone that WILL. Poor neglected cat :( edit: LOL at the thumbs down! So sorry I actually know how to care for longhaired cats and you DON'T!

If it's too painful to comb it then cut out the matted parts with scissors. Then let it grow back. Keep up with the brushing for the new fur otherwise it'll happen all over again.

it's mange. he should probably be taken to the vet if he's hissing. it's probably really painful. the vets at petsmart are like $20 a visit and another $10 for the medicine they give him. it's not expensive at all. and they can let you know if there's anything else wrong.

Cut it out or proceed with extra patience when untangling it.

Is it a long haired cat ?

If it is, you should know that long haired cat's fur needs special grooming and care.

you should comb it every day, thoroughly.
