I think the misconception is that thin or not having fat or no muscle.
Not eating or other forms of it will make you thin, but your body uses muscle as fuel as 1st, and then use fat as the next source for energy.
There are better ways to go on about losing FAT, not muscle.
I would hate to see my hard earned muscles being used as fuel.

There is a HUGE difference between wanting to lose weight and having anorexia. Anorexia is a disorder, not a diet, and is life-threatening. There is also a difference between being fit and healthy, and simply being "thin". If you aim to be fit and healthy, I can guarantee you that life will be less frustrating. I can also guarantee you that Nicole Richie is nowhere NEAR the poster child for a healthy lifestyle.
Anyways, to answer your question: people tell you that not eating doesn't work for two reasons:
1) It slows down your metabolism, and usually leads to binge eating which equals weight GAIN.
2) Most people know that there are healthier, less painful ways to lose weight, and they want to encourage others to lead a healthy lifestyle. They also dont want to encourage dangerous behavior.
Now, I learned the first one the hard way (gained about 10 pounds, which was not my goal). Eat healthy, stay active, and (if you do look up to Nicole Richie) find a better role model.
If you want tips on healthy weight loss, check out my source site. Its got wonderful tips and it inspires me every day.

along with not eating and not exercising. people like Nicole Richie use a lot of prescription drugs and cocaine. Nicole Richie looks like a bag of bones, I'm pretty sure you can come up with a better "role model" than an uneducated, anorexic drug addict.
all of these women that you see that are "thin" but not toned get this way from unhealthy lifestyles. none of them have much muscle mass which means as they get older and their all ready slow metabolisms get slower they will all have very high percentages of body fat. basically they are setting themselves up to pretty much have a crappy physique for the lifespan.

When not to eat is just as important as when to eat. Sleeping hours is vital for our waking hours. A good nights sleep requires preparation. A good night's fast also requires preparation. I have began to believe since April of this year that we eat too often. Often when we do eat, it is the wrong food. I have been feeling so much better after I began to extend my fast from 8-12 hours to 16-20 hours. When I eat,I eat a big nutritious meal and I might have a sweet treat like blueberries and sugarfree pudding ( my favorite ).About 4 hours later, I will eat a nutritous supper although it is usually smaller.

I don't know, it's something I've been struggling all my life with. I know that when I go through periods of not eating I loose weight and so long as I don't eat properly (I.e, living on a couple of toasts and ten gallons of coffee a day) I can keep my weight off, but it's not healthy, and you can't live like that forever, plus it buggers up your digestive system and makes you constipated. I'm now trying to eat healthily, but I constantly feel bloated and to my mind I'm putting weight on although people tell me I look much better. My dresses are all tight and I'm fed up with it, but I'm trying to persevere to give my system a chance to get working properly again. I really do think not eating messes things up in the long run although it does have its instantaneous rewards, and sometimes I'm tempted to just stop eating again.

If you do not eat, the body goes into starvation mode and tries to store fat for future use, that way the person never loses weight. Eating breakfast will boost your metabolism level. If one copies most celebrities, one will be adopting unhealthy techniques to lose weight. Eating healthy and exercising are the healthy and guaranteed methods of losing weight,
