Soak it in hot water and epsom salts to reduce swelling and soften skin. Try getting one of those files that file under the nail to relieve pressure. I think people also stuff cotton under it for that.

To avoid getting them try not to cut the toe nail by following the natural curve of the tip, cut the nail straight across instead. Keep the area clean and have your husband wear open sandals. I got this off Wikipedia:
In mild cases, doctors recommend daily soaking of the afflicted digit in a mixture of warm water and Epsom salts and applying an over-the-counter antiseptic. This might allow the nail to grow out so it may be trimmed properly and the flesh to heal. A simple yet extremely painful procedure for mild ingrowth (i.e., where infection is absent) requires small scissors to trim the nail completely along the nail margin down to the lateral base. This hopefully allows the embedded piece of nail to be pushed back and out from the toe tissue. Note that infection may be somewhat difficult to prevent in cleaning and treating ingrown nails owing to the warm, dark, and damp environment in shoes. Peroxide is immediately effective to help clean minor infections but iodine is more effective in the long term as it continues to prevent bacterial growth even after it is dry. [N.B.: Iodine should not be used on deep wounds. In such cases a physician or podiatrist should be consulted.] Also, bandages can help keep out bacteria but one should never apply any of the new types of spray-on bandages to ingrown nails that show any discharge - preventing drainage will likely cause intense swelling and pain.

It is also advisable to walk around barefoot so that air has a chance to circulate. Infections often become more painful when they are not exposed to air because bacteria grows more quickly in warmer conditions eg. when the foot is impacted tightly in a shoe.

These home remedies are, in serious cases, ineffective: when the flesh is far too swollen and infected, it will not allow for these procedures to work. Thus, these more severe cases, such as when the area around the nail becomes infected or the nail will not grow back properly, must be treated by a professional and the patient should avoid repeated attempts at this type of 'bathroom surgery.'

My big toe has been geting really painful the past few months. (I was going on a sunny holiday in the summer and got a bit too zealous with the nail clippers and trimmer back too far - conscious of fact i was gonna be wearing sandals). Anyway, I had no problem until months later, when the nail started growing back. The skin at the top outer corner had been without nail pressure for so long it had thickened and grown in, so when the nail grew up towards it, it began being very uncomfortable. My nail is literally trying to push through the top corner of my toe.

As a cure, (after long suffering) I soaked my feet in warm salty water for 30 mins, then got some tweezers, and gently began prying the nail off the bed and working my way towards the inflammed area. Eventually, after having tried this a few times, I rolled a little tiny cigar shaped tube of cotton wool, and with my free hand and a little clean plastic toothpick, wedged the tube of cotton behind the nail at the outer corner so that 1/3 of it was showing on the outisde (for easy removal later). When I let go the relief was instant. The nail was no longer wedged against inflammed skin and it was actually free of the overlapping skin area. I repeated this process for several days, taking some painkillers and changing the dressing each time and daubing some tea tree oil before bed. The improvement is immense and I appear to be on the way to a recovery. The nail is getting room to grow past the new skin and i am getting much relief! Hope this helps someone with a similar problem.

Take as much liquid out that you can (a little painful). Then gently lift toe nail and place cotton under ingrown nail. It will grow out.

Cut a lemon in half. Put toe in lemon. Put sock over foot. Let soak overnight.

Soak in as hot of water you can stand and a good portion of Epsom salts. When the would is feeling a bit numb, find a tiny nail file and get down to the offensive bit of the nail that digs into your toe and gently file the nail upward (no sawing motions). Place foot back into the hot epsom water. When you remove your foot, dry well and apply a little Neosporin ointment between the nail and the skin and place a breathable (aka no plastic strips) bandage and change as necessary until healed. If you notice any signs of infection, get thyself to a doctor (wink)

Try cutting a slight 'V' knotch on the end and mid point of your toe nail. This causes the nail to grow towards the center away from the edges. This is not a quick fix, but over time, it works well.

Pick at it with a pair of tweezers until you cant stand it anymore. In a few days, just squeeze it and all the pressure will be relieved.

Is your husband the kind to suck up a little pain? If its not to bad of an ingrown tonail the best way to get rid of it is to dig it out enough with somthing sterile and then take tweezers and pull it out. Making sure to get the whole thing. Can be very painful. Somtimes better than going to a doctor who will make your toes look funny after hes done

It will be too tender to get any sort of file or anything near it. Have a warm/hot bath and once the skin has softened, roll the skin away from the nail... What your trying to do is remove the nail from the skin allowing it to grow out... If it is an occuring problem, i had a small operation to remove the base of my toe nail on each side- havent had once since!!

I agree with linav88. although, if the toe is infected, you need to open the toe up at the side and get a Q-tip and apply Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic ointment directly into the toe to kill the infection.

Keep the toe medicated and bandaged during the day, then like linav88 said, soak it in the Epsom salt at night and let it get some air at night.

Well, just a couple of months ago, my dear Mum told me to pour a cap full of bleach into the crevice beside the toe nail. Whether you have to cut away as much of the nail beforehand, I am unsure. But one would think so.
However, I haven't tried it, so why not give that a go.

I could give you many suggestions, but... don't even try to do it yourself. You can only make things worse if you get toenail infected! Go to a specialist. Podiatrist.

Agreed with Linav88. I also soaked the area with alcohol to kill any infection trying to set in when I had to deal with it.
