I am not a religious person who believes in God, but I do believe there are higher powers at work that grants us forgiveness and loves us... does that count as believing in God?

I suppose you are an agnostic. That is, you have enough sense to realize that different people use the term god or God very differently, and some believe it refers to something very real, some consider it a sort of abstraction, and some admit they don't have enough information to decide.

If you ask what I believe, I figure since I do not have evidence for belief in God in the capital-G sense, there is no reason for me to believe he/she/it exists. I am not in the habit of believing other things in the absence of evidence, let alone in the face of evidence to the contrary, so I don't believe in a capital-G type God.

Using a lower-case, however, I find the stories of polytheism useful to illustrate certain points. Saying "Mother Earth" is easier than saying "natural law as it functions on this planet," and shows a personalization that is useful in understanding that we must have respect for this planet or we will very soon make it uninhabitable.

As to granting you forgiveness and loving you, is there any reason that can't be attributed to your own higher self, or to a symbolic representation of a reality which is much more abstract and esoteric? It gives you the comfort you should have, so as long as you recognize it as being less than literally true, the metaphor is a useful one. In fact, it is yourself who needs to forgive you, and to love you. But saying it that way renders you rather completely self-absorbed, so you reach for something beyond you. That something may well be a philosophical abstraction, but there's no harm in that.

The concept of "God" has always been around. The question should be, "is there a God, or not?"
If there is no God, then we can do whatever we want, without fear of repercussions of an afterlife, only the repercussions of humanity. We should then get whatever we want, stepping on anyone that gets in the way, so as to make our own selfish lives as comfortable as possible.
Also, if there is no God, then why let the disadvantaged live? They just use up precious resources. Does anything really matter then?
Most likely we're here for a divine reason. What that reason is no one truly knows. We have religions that try to explain why were here, but no one offers absolute proof that his/her religion is the right one. I do believe that we should practice this one statement offered by Jesus....."Do unto others as one would want them to do to you." With just practicing this alone, we would all get along very well.

Yes, it does. People all over the world believe in God in different forms according to their culture. It is unfortunate that some Christians insist unless you believe exactly as they do you will go to hell; just isn't true. They presume to speak for God, yet they know so little about Him. Your explanation is much closer to the truth; God does grant us forgiveness and loves...He also wants us to be with Him, so if we do not complete our time here on earth satisfactorily, we repeat it until we do...but all get to Heaven eventually.

you can choose to believe it or not to, it doesn't matter, coz what most important is we don't do bad thing to hurt people, or other life, we dont do sin to harm any life, and help people in any function that you can with sinceres and generous, give your kindness n help to the needy, show your love to the people around you, no matter where does they come from and what's their races are, we are not perfect human, not everyone can be a noble like sister Ann, but we try to be, with no guilt, and if you can think like what i mentioned above, even more greater than i, then you already have your own religion at your heart which is same as God.

The word god is a title given to deities. If you believe in deities it would the same as believing in gods.

Pagans, Christians, the Hindu, all worship gods, however, they are different gods.

Now that the term god has been explained, you can only answer this question yourself.. Do you believe in the God of Abraham or not?

He is the creator of this world ant the human race.
Thus, he is responsible for all we have done.
Take that any way you wish.
Go ahead and worship him.
He'll like you then.
And of course, put you in front of people who don't.

You can still rather believe in J. R. "Bob" Dobbs, instead...
