........have you EVER had thoughts of "Am I going to hell when I die?"Especially when you lie in bed at night and listen to your heart beat?
I had thoughts like that, even when I flipped my car one day.I thought,"If I died, would I end up in hell?"
If hell does NOT exsist, why do people have thoughts like that?

No... you weren't... atheists do not HAVE thoughts like that. It seems, rather, that you just didn't have any clear idea WHAT you believed. The fact that you were 'SAVED' at the age of 23 tells that you do not have any critical thinking skills. So... you're not atheist material, anyway.

'Faith' (magical, wishful thinking) is a lame and pathetic substitute for 'evidence'.

Faith-based 'belief' (the internalized certainty that you are privy to the 'truth' pertaining to vital aspects of existence and reality) is a lame and pathetic substitute for 'knowledge'... in fact, it is the ILLUSION of knowledge.

Faith + belief ---> Self-delusion and willful ignorance.

'Belief' is an insidious mind-killer... it cuts one off from the open-minded and intellectually honest (willing to actively question and doubt one's own assumptions) consideration of alternative possibilities.

I will agree with the people that say you have been conditioned to believe in this heaven and hell. How quick people are to believe when they're down at their lowest, and really need something to hang-on too. A near death experience will do it to. Read Duck Phup, grasp what he's saying, he says it better than most. Then read Mark101112 who whines then gives a silly scripture, from a book written a hundred years after JC died. And JC was practicing Judaism before he broke from their doctrine. Think how many times religion has morphed into a new religion with the new Hot God. It's said what you don't know cant hurt you. (maybe) What you do know that isn't true, (Can) Just think of those Muslims flying jets on Sept.11 do you think they're up in their heaven with those virgins. Maybe they're up there with virgin catholic nuns.

Nah. My Catholic upbringing placed a lot more emphasis on the Blessed Mother Loves Everybody trope than on the Sinners Bound for Hellfire trope. Then I stopped believing sometime in high school. So fears of hell were never a problem for me.

I will admit that recently I've lain awake listening to my heartbeat. There's a history of heart disease in my family and I'm approaching the age when the first symptoms tend to show up.

The only reason many atheists (including me) have occasional thoughts about the existence of hell and whether or not we will go there is because, frankly, the idea is very scary. I really don't believe in it, no matter how much I would want to. The whole idea of hell was fabricated by humanity to be as scary as possible. Its like "think of the scariest possible situation that you could be in". Of course, the idea of a fiery doomsday like place where you will spend infinity being tortured doesn't sound very original to me, but scary, nonetheless. I don't really fear hell (I don't believe in it), but I do get occasional "what if" thoughts.

A couple of times when I was about 12, yes. People are unsure of themselves at that age. I had thoughts like that because I'd heard about hell from people like you.

Evolution is a fairytale? You're the one who believes in fairies, pal.

Indeed I have.
Although I am not really a member of any religion, I do believe in God's existence.
And God and I don't quite like each other, so I'm pretty sure I'll end in hell when I die.
And I'm not doing a damn thing for that "God" to save me!

I think about joining The Church of the SubGenius. In that case, even if I'm not saved, I'll at least have 90 dollars...

The fact that some think about this doesn't mean that hell exist. I'm an Atheist and I never have those silly thoughts.

Nope, the only time I have thoughts like that are when I'm evaluating hypothetical questions like this one.

I would guess that the majority of the 4 billion non Christians in the world have never consider it either.

I'm Atheist, and the only time I say, "I'm going to Hell" is if I'm patronizing Christians, or am just joking...I don't stay up at night wondering if I'm going to Hell, I stay up at night wondering how am I gonna fix my relationship with my gf...which COULD be considered a Hell, since we're not doing too good...so maybe that is...ah, who cares? If I go to Hell then I know it was for a better reason than why Christians are going to Heaven...just my humble opinion....but I don't believe in Hell so I don't worry myself about it.

We do not know if hell does or does not exisist. Just like certain people say ghosts exsist, and some believe they don't. In order to keep yourself from having scary thoughts like this while trying to relax in bed- watch TV as you go to sleep or listen to the radio- it will distract your mind.
