I would take the bird you still have to an avian vet, because it sounds like your dead bird [:'(] was sick, thus, the one that's still alive could have it too, and it'll just spread to your new bird.

P.S. You should quarantine your new bird for at least two months when you get him, so you can monitor both birds for any symptoms.

The most common cause of death is respiratory- the leg incident created stress, which lowered hi little budgie immunity, and he got sick.

At the pet store there are two things you should always have on hand: Ornacycline (for illness)
and Vitamins that you put a drop in whenever you give fresh water.

Budgies also LOVE millet on a stick, and happy birds = good strong immunity.

The time to medicate the bird is when you see them sitting fluffed out and sort of slit-eyed for long period of time.

When a bird is noticeably sick it's usually too late, so you have to learn to spot illness early in your birds by watching them. If they are 'acting weird' they could be sick.

If you get another budgie, when you introduce it TAKE YOUR
OTHER BUDGIE OUT of the Cage. Put the new one in, and it should go a little better. Doing this at night might help, too.

If your bird you have now is female, get a male. If it's a male another male would probably work better as far as getting along w/ each other.

You cover your birds at night and keep them draft-free, right?
No a/c? Also- if you use teflon to cook- once teflon is really hot it releases fumes that'll kill birds.

Birds have extremely fragile respiratory systems, and smoke, bug spray, paint, any thing with fumes can hurt them,

birds are very sensitive...in every aspect. Even though he was standing on the leg, it most likely was injured. Birds have hollow bones (alowing less weight for flight). If the two birds were together a while, you may have another situation....some breeds of birds mate for life. If you notice your female not eating, you may consider another male, to take her mind off her loss. If one in the pair dies (in birds that mate for life) a lot of times the other will stop eating, grooming themselve, and being sociable.
the reason your bird that passed was puffed up and loosing feathers is because he was under stress (probably from pain).

If his feathers were puffed out it's a good indication that he was sick. By puffing out feathers birds are trying to retain heat. The stress from the broken leg may have been too much for him to endure.
