When transitioning a kitten to regular food, it's a good idea to do it gradually. You could start off by mixing canned kitten food with KMR milk replacement powder and some water. Then gradully remove the KMR and switch them to a diet of canned kitten food 2x a day, leaving out dry kitten food and water all day. Kittens need lots of nutrition, so no need to be stingy. As for brands, try Authority, it's what we use at the cat shelter where I work.

Purina Kitten Chow. Purina is a great brand that has foods for all the stages of a cat's life.
I'm not 100% sure that purina kitten chow is soft. But it doesn't matter! All you have to do is place the kitten food in a bowl and pour a little milk, water, or chicken broth over it. This will soften the food, add extra nutrition, and your kitten will love it!
You don't have to feed the kitten soft food for long though; kittens can begin to eat hard food at 6 or 7 weeks.

Start off with soft food, expecting them to go from milk to kibble is a little harsh! You can slowly introduce dry food later by mixing it with the canned.
You can start to introduce this from 4 weeks of age. The kittens will still need milk up until about 6 weeks of age - if you still have the mother, she might continue to suckle them indefinitely, but she should be spayed once the kittens are 8 weeks of age - they will be independant of her by then, and since she is already capable of becoming pregnant again she should be kept inside and spayed asap.
Different brands of cat food are of different quality. Supermarket brands like whiskas, felix, fancy feast and meow mix are the lower end of the scale. Their kitten food will be fine while the cat is growing, but they're not always ideal brands for adult cats, so you might want to start off on the kitten versions of higher quality brands like Iams, Eukanuba, Royal Canin or Hills Science Plan.

our vet told us to use purina kitten chow with a little bit of warm water poured over it to soften it. Also if they still will not take to it you can use a little bit of canned kitten food and mix it up together with a little water. Sometimes I would pour kitten replacement formula room temperature over kitten food too. we had one of our kittens that would not eat so we tried lots of things. Good luck
