or do they have their menstrual cycle until they die?

Dogs, or more correctly b itches, do not menstruate. Neither do they have a menopause. They continue to have 'seasons' until they die if left unspayed.
Any responsible owner will have a b itch spayed by the time she reaches eight years of age, even if she was a breeding b itch, as at that age she is too old to breed and deserves a healthy, hassle free retirement.

They carry on having heats until they die, although an unspayed b itch has a 1 in 10 chance of getting pyometra and a 1 in 4 chance of getting mammary cancer, so you don't often see old b itches that are still having heats!

It's not a 'menstrual cycle' in dogs - their reproductive cycle is different from humans. Humans menstruate when they've finished ovulating, when the unfertilised egg is being flushed out of the uterus. Dogs have a 'heat' or 'season' while they are ovulating, when they're ready to accept a male to mate.

It's not a true menopause like humans have, but they do greatly reduce in fertility. My grandma had a cat for 21 years. After about 12, she stopped having kittens. Same thing with dogs. A ten year old could have puppies, but it isn't a super common thing in dogs. And they should be spayed before that anyway.

I had a mini dachshund that lived to be 17. She had heart problems but never lost her heat cycle. Unlike humans they do not have menopause. I do however think animals like the primates actually do. Evita

YES they can go through the menepause, I have known of several female dogs to do so, however it is not like a human menepause, one of my dogs bled uncontrolably - was frightening, and we wer advised she was simply goin through the menepause and it was not a huge concern... she wore doggy nappies! she was 7 when this happened.
