When Guru Gobind Singh introduced the Khalsa in 1699, he gave the identification of the 5 K's to all Sikhs, including women. Women were not excluded from wearing turbans, but were encouraged to.

So why is it so uncommon? My best explanation (which may not be the whole story - I am still a learner, like you) is that it is and was culturally uncommon. Sikhism is typically identified with the male "saint-soldier" with a turban and long beard. Although there are many famous women in Sikh history who did wear a turban, it is just not as common in India.

However, you will find that many American Sikh (ie. American converts to Sikhism) women wear turbans - though it seems contradictory, converts to Sikhism do seem to be more in touch with the true meaning of Sikhism than do Indian Sikhs in general.

I have a couple more points to make. A turban is not a "scarf" wrapped around the head. it is a roughly 5-6 meter cloth which is folded and then tied around the head. Women wear a "scarf", also known as a dupatta or chunni and is completely different to the Islamic burkha, even when wearing a turban. The scarf symbolizes the grace of a woman and is intended to provide an equivilent identity to the male's long beards.

I hope that helps.

Sikh women wear dopattas. Some wear sturbans. Turbans are just scarves wrapped round and round to form the turban. As times change, so do the rules regarding clothing requirements.

interior the united kingdom Sikhs additionally objected to wearing protection helmets and, amazingly, gained their conflict. The argument replaced into they had to placed on their turbans, while under the policies of their faith the requirement is purely to no longer decrease their hair and absolutely everyone who has attended hockey fits the place a Sikh team replaced into enjoying might have seen gamers enjoying bare headed. in the event that they might do it for hockey, what's the objection to eliminating the turban as a manner to placed on a protection helmet? there is likewise a legal defence the place one is caught with an offensive weapon and it seems to affix 1's national dress (right here the Scots income alongside with the Sikhs). the comprehensive factor with motor scooters is that no-one is obliging Sikhs to trip them. in the event that they choose to realize this, then they might desire to be arranged to obey an identical protection policies as different individuals, albeit at some own inconvenience. As for the dagger -- I even have had countless Sikh associates and not in any respect as quickly as talked approximately any of them wearing a dagger. inspite of the 5 Ks, it variety of feels to be recognized as an non-compulsory extra beneficial by using almost all of`Sikhs. i ask your self what they do while they are traveling by using airplane? I even have yet to envision of any dispute between airline officers and dagger wearing Sikhs. possibly while it extremely is a case of having on the airplane or no longer, the dagger seems to be expendable.
