I have recently been perscribed to an Anti- Depresant called Amitriptyline. Now I know that all anti-depres. say that they can cause weight gain or loss. But, I was curious to know if weight gain was a big syntom for this particular anti-depres.? I have been trying and sucessfully losing weight and would like to keep it that way. Please help me with this question. Thanks!!

Amitriptyline is one of the older classes (but still effective) of drugs called tricyclics. They can take longer to work than the newer SSRI's and can cause some weight gain. The key is the dosage that you are on.

unfortunately weight gain is a big side effect with this particular medication. A different anti depressant that does not have weight gain as a side effect is Paxil. Try the Amitriptyline for now and see what happens. If you find yourself gaining weight ask for a different medication.

I've been taking amitriptyline for just over 3 years now, and didn't notice any problems with losing weight after I started with it. I take a small dose each day, and lost a healthy 16 pounds in 2006. In my opinion, you should be fine.

The effectiveness of antidepressants, as well as the presence or absence of side effects, is dependent upon so many factors that you'll only know with practical experience. Whatever the side effects, there's a good chance that they'll be lower than that of a full dose, as amitryptiline, or Elavil as it is also known, is usually prescribed in lower doses for pain control than for depression.

I also take this drug...and thank god, no weight gain for me...
If you find that this medicine puts too much weight on you, then you may want to ask the doctor to put you on something else...there are a lot of alternatives out there, that's for sure...

Occasionally my patients at work have been on this medication. I have not noticed that any of them have been particularly obese. Good luck.
