Even when they're not on duty?

The reason for this question is a dispute with a friend, who states that Soldiers carry weapons all the time.

Personal, I think that it is more of a security Problem if Soldiers would carry weapons all the time.
Security is provided from Soldiers on duty, on patrol, gates or whatever. But if a soldier of duty carries a weaponm you could attack the base even without weapons.

And the reason for this question is? This type of question may come across as a terrorist probe.

It depends on the base, and the alert level. In a combat zone, yes. Regular alert status on a base in the US, no.

Only when they are on guard duty. During regular working hours they don't carry weapons unless they are in the military police units. Shore patrol for Navy. Depends on what country they are in also. While detailed in a "war zone" the weapon is kept close by.

No they don't.

You would only carry a weapon when the task required it...

To stand a watch, go on a mission...

I was in the Navy for 9 years and only carried a weapon on drills for "Intruder Alert" on our submarine. As soon as the drill was done, the weapons got locked back in the locker.

(Who ever thought it was a good idea to have M-14 rifles as a primary security weapon onboard a round steel tube? Brilliant!)

g-day!

Nope, kind of weird I know. If you had five guys storm a US base with automatic weapons it would be a blood bath.
