Ice packs on the outside of the jaw 20 minutes on 20 minutes off NO HEAT! The heat will make the swelling increase. Post op swelling is common and the ice will help to reduce the swelling, and since the teeth were complicated to remove it explains why she would have such swelling. Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours or if your dentist has prescribed something else continue to take those meds FAITHFULLY. Call your dentist is you have any concerns especially if the swelling continues to worsen over the next 12-24 hrs. No drinking through a straw, no smoking. Rest and plenty of fluids and lots of ice packs.
Hope your sister gets better soon.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, they told me to use cold compresses at first, and then warm compresses after the 3rd day, so I would say cold for now.

I don't know what shes on for pain, but she's going to want some ibuprofen (advil, motrin, etc) for the swelling and inflammation. If shes taking a narcotic like percocet, vicodin, anything thats opiate/acetaminophen mixture, I would take 600mg of ibuprofen every 4-6 hours as needed. If she was given something like vicoprofen (only comes in 7.5/200) that contains ibuprofen in it, I would just supplement it with an extra 400mg of ibuprofen to get the 600mg dose. That should help a lot with swelling and inflammation.

Also tell her to make sure she rinses her mouth out with salt water regularly, as that will help keep the wounds clean and promote healing.

Continue with the ice even if it doesn't seem to be helping, heat will just make the swelling worse. If it continues for more than a couple days, call the dentist and ask about infection. Good luck.

Swelling is normal after surgery but if it continues I would say its an infection but she should be on antibiotics, I hope! Any doctor knows this as standard medical practice. This is the unfortunate part of life learning how things may not always be so pleasant in life such as surgery. I never like them myself. It just takes time that's all.

Ice can sluggish your blood down considering that it is bloodless and would certainly "freeze" your blood. So check out to not devour an excessive amount of ice. It slows your blood down and in the event you devour an excessive amount of they're going to ultimately quit your middle.
