She is in heat. This is not the same thing as a period.
Human's periods occur at the end of their ovulation cycle; the blood is the result of the egg and womb contents being flushed out. Dog's heat cycle occur while they are ovulating - the blood you see is part or a discharge from the womb that is swollen and getting ready to receive a fertilised egg.
It's very important for you to have your dog spayed - reproductive organs removed. Not only will this prevent her having puppies, which you certainly don't want in your position, but will prevent her getting ovarian and cervical cancer, as well as pyometra. Pyometra is a potentially fatal uterine infection that 1 in 10 unspayed female dogs get.
If you'd had your dog spayed before her first heat cycle, at around 6 months of age, you would probably have saved her from mammary cancer in later life, something 1 in 4 female dogs get. Since your dog has had a few heat cycles, your chances of saving her from that by spaying are greatly reduced, but it certainly isn't too late to do it.
Please be a responsible dog owner and have her spayed.

Dogs don't have periods! They go into heat! The best thing to do is to have her spayed, and that will take care of that problem and prevent other health problems like cancer.

Dogs go in to heat, season or estrus. No dogs do not get periods. Estrus is the opposite of a period. Periods are a result of pregnancy not taking place. (which is why many go WOOOOO when they get it) Estrus is the dogs uterus preparing to except pregnancy. So no your dog does not have its period but, she probably is in heat.

Yes,they are mammals and mammals have periods..heats they are called.Since she has started, she will probably be having one every 6 months or so.Make sure you never put her outside alone..males from blocks away will sniff her out and somehow scale that 6 ft. privacy fence to get a piece of your lil girl....if you don't plan on breeding her,you may want to get her spayed.this goes on for a total of about 3 weeks, with the 2nd week being the good breeding week.Good luck in keeping her safe! :)

Yes, it's called heat. If you care about your dog, get her fixed. She will be healthier, less at risk for cancer, easier to deal with, and happier. Do this for her-- she deserves a good life and it's your job to give it to her. http://www.foxvalleypets.org/dogs/?details=19&page=122

Yes.. She's in heat... watch out now.... cuz all the male dogs will smell it and come running!... Best advice is to keep her indoors unless you want a bunch of mutt puppies! Or... get her fixed as mentioned above! lol
