I put him in his crate when we go to bed and straight away he starts barking, his crate is in the kitchen and we have an open plan house so when he is barking we can hear him in the bedroom, it is stopping us from sleeping and it is reallly affecting us!. We have tried loads of toys and giving him treats when he gets in his crate but nothing seems to be working. I am at the end of my tether with him but I love him to pieces and I am afraid I wont be able to stand this much longer!!. Please can someone help me?

You need to perservere and be consistent.

Dog's need routine. Put him in the crate at the same time each night, give him everything he needs in it, and go to bed. Make sure he's been out for a pee before he goes in. Then do NOT respond to the barking, no matter what. Don't even call out a 'shush' to him. Certainly don't go down to him! You could put a radio next to his crate to keep him company,or even a ticking clock. Make the routine the same every night

Your puppy also needs gradual introduction to the crate, you can't just put him in it and close the door all of a sudden. He needs to know the crate is his space, and feel comfortable in it. Leave the door of it open during the day, and put his meals in there. Try gradually increasing the time he is spent shut in there - just a few minutes at first, then gradully increase.

This will take a few nights, but it's important not to give in at any point. Buy some earplugs for yourself until it's sorted!

I would recommend putting the crate in your bedroom next to your bed so that he knows you're there. It may help. Also, a ticking clock nearby could help calm him. He's only a baby, and it's your responsibility to train him and make sure he's healthy and happy. You can't just give him up so soon. You've barely tried to help him! You shouldn't give him up just because you can't crate train him properly. Try looking crate training up on the internet. I'm sure you'll find information. Shih-Tzu's are pretty intelligent dogs, and with training, your puppy can easily pick up training quickly. Puppies are like babies. It takes a lot of patience to show them what's right and what's wrong. If your baby wouldn't sleep through the night, would you say you're at the end of your tether and consider giving him up? No, you wouldn't. A puppy is a lifetime commitment.

First of all, you should know how to spell the name of the breed that you have. It's Shih tzu.

This is what puppies do. They thrive on companionship and can be traumatized by being isolated because they were snatched away from they're litter mates and mother and don't know why. For the first month or so you should allow the puppy to sleep in the same room as you.

When I got my Papillon puppy he was 3 months old. I let him sleep with me so he wouldn't feel alone and this didn't negatively affect his crate training at all.

Puppies are like babies. You can't expect them to sleep through the night. They need to be comforted, as well as allowed to relieve their bladders and bowels in the middle of the night.

He is lonely. Some dogs suffer loneliness more than others.
I have a Lhasa (a lot like a Shitsu).
If you take him to bed with you, he won't cry. But he'll expect to get into your bed from now on. I feel for the dog. Whatever the nazi trainers say, I would open my heart and comfort his loneliness. He's just a baby @ 17 weeks :(

you could maybe record your voice on a cd and play it through the night to him so he would think you were still there cus' our dogs did that when we first got them but have now got used to it. Hope this helps!
