Really, it's better to spay and neuter animals. It keeps them healthier. This site explains it better than I can.
http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/why_you_should_spay_or_neuter_your_pet.html
1. Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to run away from home.
2. Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to fight with other animals, thus saving themselves much pain and their owners high veterinary bills.
3. Spayed and neutered pets are less distracted by sexual instincts and become easier to train.
4. Spayed and neutered dogs are usually more reliable “watch dogs” and more responsive to family members because they are less distracted by sexual instincts.
5. Female dogs in heat stain carpets and furniture. Spaying eliminates this problem.
6. Female cats in heat yowl and exhibit anxious behavior that is annoying to their owners. Spaying eliminates this problem.
7. Male cats spray both inside and outside the house. The spray has an obnoxious, unmistakable odor. Neutering eliminates this problem.
8. Female dogs and cats attract noisy, fighting and bothersome male dogs and cats.
9. Spayed female pets are less likely to develop breast cancer or pyometra (a common uterine infection in unsprayed females).
10. Neutered male pets are less likely to suffer infections or disorders in the prepuce or prostate glands.
11. Pregnant female pets eat more, both when pregnant and after offspring are born. Puppies and kittens are expensive to feed.
12. Spayed and neutered animals are cheaper to license.
13. Female pets have no need to bear one litter before spaying; that is an old wives' tale.
14. Neutering does not make a pet fat or lazy. Often the metabolism of a pet decreases after spaying or neutering, and the owner must be cautious not to overfeed. Feeding a spayed or neutered pet can actually be cheaper.
15. Approximately every 4 seconds one animal is killed by euthanasia because no one wants it. There is simply no excuse for allowing pets to breed.

The reason to castrate a dog is for his health, not because he's inconveniencing you with unwanted behaviour.
Castration only stops sexual behaviour - humping can sometimes be a dominance things so it may not completely stop this but it should reduce it.
It also depends how old the dog is - after he's fully grown, castration is less likely to have a behavioural affect. It does not really calm dogs down though, as I said it only affects sexual behaviour, not behaviour in general. It will not change his personality! Just ask anyone who's had their dog done.
Please get your dog castrated to save him from prostate and testicular problems, and do avoid the risk of him impregnating some unsuspecting b itch.
Chalice
EDIT: It is NOT merely 'birth control' after 6 months of age, what a stupid thing to say. Anyone who's ever seen uncastrated males suffer with prostate problems would not say such a thing.

I am not going to preach to you to neuter your dog to save the world.BUT,I will say that if you have no intentions on breeding him,for HIS health, get him neutered. And by the way, they do NOT "chop them off" as I read above..lol.The vet will make a small incision, take out the 2 sacs, and put a few dissolvable stitches in.In 24 hours, him or you will barely even remember he just had surgery.Intact males are known to be more aggressive and the health risks associated with having his parts are NOT worth keeping them.

If you neuter before 6mo it does help to prevent marking and foot humping. Anything later is merely birth control. A lot of people make up a lot of lies in order to further their antibreeding agenda, but in reality, neutering is merely birth control after the 6mo mark.

Getting your dog neutered will not drastically change his personality. Doing so WILL help him in more ways than one!!
