Human medications are deductible on Form 1040 schedule A only if prescribed by a doctor. Question: are animal meds also deductible if prescribed by a veterinarian?

I know you all think this is a silly question. But Pub 502 says "You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for prescribed medicines and drugs. A prescribed drug is one that requires a prescription by a doctor for its use by an individual." My cat is an individual cat and her prescriptions are out of my pocket.

No. You can't claim a pet as a dependent so you can't claim any expenses for the pet. The only way that you could claim any animal expenses is if you were a farmer raising animals, or ran a business involving animals. You can't claim pet medicines as medical deductions even is prescribed by a veterinarian.

No. Pets are not taxed deducatble. If you adopt out an animal from a shelter you really can't even deduct that. I tried asking my boyfriend who took a Federal Tax course for his MBA (he's also does accounting work), if I will be able to deduct my adopted dog and the items and he there really is no way. I not sure, but there was a way if you made a donation (adopted) the dog they would subtract the value of the dog minus the donation and that would be deducatble or something like that. However you can't really prove a dog's worth like that. So no, trust me I asked. Good Luck

Medications are only deductible for the taxpayer, spouse and legal dependents listed on the taxpayer's tax return. Since pets are not legal dependents, their meds are not deductible.

If the animal is only a pet, no. If the animal is income producing for you, then yes. For example, an animal used in television commercials.

If the animal is a personal assistant like a guide dog, then yes.
