Why? Why not?

The Catholic priests have been given authority by Jesus Christ himself.

Jn 20:19-23

In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be with you,'

and, after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord,

and he said to them again, 'Peace be with you. 'As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.'

After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit.

If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.

How do you interpret this passage?
Do you believe that this gift by the Holy Spirit has been passed down to the priests from the apostles?
If it was only given to the apostles then how will we be forgiven?

I wish someday you will recieve this Sacrament.

God bless us all

When Jesus began the Ministry of Reconciliation and breathed the Holy Spirit upon His Apostles and gave them the gift to forgive and retain sins. The idea was that if the penitent committed a sin they were given the opportunity to seek forgiveness from those they harmed because of the sin. If they were unable to do so that is why there was the Ministry of Reconciliation. And considering what St. John said about there being deadly sin (mortal sin) in which praying alone would not work. The only means was the Ministry of Reconciliation. The only difference from how Reconciliation was back then and how it is now is that the penitent would have gone before the entire church (community) to confess their sins. Well obviously those who committed grave sins such as murder, rape, adultery, etc. would also have to confess their sins in this manner. As a result many Christians were reluctant to be baptized until their 30's which was considered back then being middle aged. That is why confession had been made private.

Yes I believe that the sacrament of confession is necessary.

When Jesus said this to his Apostles, confession was something they knew all about. It wasn't new to them. The Jewish faith also included a means for confession to God through a priest.

In the old Jewish faith you were required to confess your sins as well. People traveled many miles, sometimes it took days. They had to prepare, taking food etc. They had to take their best animal from their livestock, this represented a sacrifice because the best animal was worth the most money. When they got to the temple they had to say their sins out loud to the priest. They then killed the animal themselves and the priest burned it as a sacrifice for that persons sins.

So, the priest was intricately involved in the act of repentance in the days of Christ. When he said this to the Apostles, he was letting them know that they were now priests, they had the authority to hear and forgive a persons sins...Jesus Christ being the sacrifice for them.

It all makes so much sense and is so clear. Protestants just do not understand the sacrament. They will tell you that you do not need to have a priest, you can go directly to God. The problem with that is there is no penance and no perfect contrition. Penance is necessary, contrition and absolution...all part of the ancient rite still retained today by Christ's own command...only in the Catholic Church.

This is a great example of WHY it is so important to read the ENTIRE Bible!
The catholic church is showing its cult atatus, claiming that it. alone has the way, the truth, etc...
ALL cults claim this (that only they are the keepers of some special, God-given thing, knowledge, ritual, etc...)
The new testament shows us that the priesthood is dead and that all Believers in Christ are priests.
The Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopalian, 7th day advbentists (any organised, long established "christian" church) is following the Jewish pristhood example by having one man stand in front of the congregation as an intermediator between God and man. The veil was torn and now we all are responsable to go to God on our own!

Yes I believe from all my hart and power.
That gift is not lost. First in Matthew16:17-19 ' Blessed are you,Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by My Father in heaven.and I tel you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.' so the Pope(St Peter) is choice by JESUS to reprezent Him on Earth, and he gives the God Blessing throw all Episcopes, and those on the priests. The first Episcopes in the World was The Apostoles. Any gift given by JESUS Christ is not lost , it can be used in different time, will be men who will say sorry for their sins , directly to JESUS Christ, in an mondial craying, when men will accepted to believe in God, when JESUS will come back soon on Earth, until that the 8TH day(JNSR) we must say sorry throw the priests, it is The Will of God. I whant The Blessing of God Father in the Name o JESUS Christ. Amen.(Sorry for gramatical mistakes)

When we hold onto negative emotions, it will destroy us. Jesus called himself, "the son of man", not the son of God. He rebuked a man for calling him good. He said only his father in heaven was good. He also said we are all the same as him. That we could do all the things he did if we had faith the size of a mustard seed. Too, when he taught us to pray, he said the “OUR” Father who art in heaven…. Not the MY father. We are all equal to Jesus in God's eyes. If you believe in Jesus, believe this, because he said so.
Peace
