Actually the seat at the end of the bed has come historically from the huge bedrooms of kings and queens and other castles.
So no matter what style you have you can put seating of various sorts infront of the bed as long as it leaves room for walking by - at least 3 ft - and if it does not make the room look too crowded.
You can use two ottomans, one long or square, or oblong large ottoman, a fainting couch, a couch, a storage bench, a trunk and a whole variety of other items for sitting on. It depends what type of sitting do you plan on offering: comfortable enough to watch TV - or just for putting your socks and shoes on.

Rules, ve dun't need no d*** rules - make the seat 9 feet long, run it all the way across the room, it's your bedroom - are you going invite critics in to examine it? Take a look at the thousands of beds that had a hope chest at the foot of the bed with padding on top. Do you think nobody ever sat on those?
If you make the seat the same width as the bed, someone is going to clip their knee coming around the corner because it is lower than the bed. Make it shorter - 4' would be nice.

there are no rules, your bedroom so do what you want where you want it,an ideal length would be approx 4ft to avoid banging into it, as for the width i think this would depend on the room avalible to you and curved corners are better then right angles for a softer look.
