I am 31 and have 2 kids, 11 and 8. My little sister is turning 17 tomorrow and I have no idea what to get her for her birthday. I'm not up on the latest high school trends, so I don't want to buy something she won't use. Is cash a good idea? If so, how much?

cash for a 17yr old is ALWAYs a good idea, unless shes into drugs. then a gift card to MACYS or some hip clothing store like Pac Sun, Abecrombie and Fitch, Wet Seal, or Victorias Secret, or somewhere like that would be nice too. a girl can never have too many clothes, let alone nice ones. or if shes more into the outdoors, take her out on a camping trip or hike just the two of you. since theres such an age difference take her and a friend to a rock concert. that would be FUUUUUN.

i like giving cash as a present but it can sometimes seem a little impersonal and ill thought out. SO people often opt for store vouchers . however as a reciever i remember thinking cash would always be better whenever a token for woolworths fell out of a birthday card.
cash is vouchers for anywhere . thats how i market it when giving money as a gift .
the amount ? whatever you want to and feel comfortable with .
The best birthday gift for a 17 year old i would guess is a party .:)

Cash would be good, or a gift card of some sort. Maybe an iTunes gift card if she likes music (they have those in a lot of grocery stores, and target and places like that). I would say no less than $20, no more than $100, but that's just my opinion.

Cash or gift cards are always an excellent idea for a gift. $50 to $100 should be good.

Cash or a gift card to her favorite clothing store. Give her what you can afford to give her.

Your best bet Nicole is a gift card from your kid sister's favorite store, saves you time and hassle by having to return something. works great!

$ is allway well come. If your loaded $100.
But you have two kid's, so let's be real. $20 is fair.
