Your best source for information on stuttering is The Stuttering Foundation of America at www.stutteringhelp.org. There is no cure but stuttering can be controlled with various methods including speech therapy; there is a drug being studied called pagoclone which is showing promise. Stuttering can be inherited. There is something involving the amount of dopamine in the brain that causes it. There are other possible causes also.

There is no known single or exclusive cause of stuttering. It has been correlated to genetics but has not yet proven. According to studies, brain scan of adult stutterers undergo several abnormalities.
During talking adult stutterers have more activity in their right hemispheres ( a lobe of the brain which is associated with emotions) than in their left hemispheres ( a lobe which is associated with speech).
When talking, adult stutterers have central auditory processing underactivity. It has been suggested that stutterers may have an inability to integrate auditory and somatic processes.
Adult stutterers have overactivity in the left motor control area. The fact that there is a primarily overtense and overstimulated respiration during stuttering, the brain area that controls the vocal folds and articulation muscles(lips, jaw, and tongue), become overactive.
Stuttering is also correlated with disrupted fibers (possibly due to an early brain damage or to a genetic defect) between the speech area and language planning area, in the left hemisphere of the brain.
Stress is another contributing factor causing stuttering. But at the end, it is being said that stuttering actually relieves stress of the stutterers.
There are various therapies designed for stutterers which provides a great room for improvement. There are medications as well that a doctor can prescribe which proved to decrease stuttering. In general however, there is no strong evidence of any method that offers complete cure to stuttering. There are some anecdotal claims of some cure but still needs a strong evidence to be proven.

the best way to stop someone from stuttering is to speak slowly when talking to them, in time their speech will slow down too.
