Because not everything in life is about our own personal gain. There is more to it than that.
Believe me though, the feeling you get inside when you help someone for no reward, IS a reward in itself. It's a good way of learning to value yourself, as you realise that the world is a better place because of you. I can't think of many better rewards than that.

Do you not get a general good feeling when you help someone? Is that not reward enough?
Maybe we should help other people simply because one day we will be glad of someone to help us.
Or - for the religious amongst us - because we learn in the scriptures about being kind to others and helping them. We might be rewarded after we leave this life.

What goes around comes around. Helping another person can have benefits to you in the future even if you do not see it now.
Giving benefits the giver and the giftee. Read Hamlet. Balance between "Neither a borrower nor a lender be" with "The quality of mercy is not strained"
In reality, you can be a lender. Put your money in a bank. They will loan it with safeguards and pay you interest.
Giving makes the world a richer place. But do not stand on the corner giving away free hot dogs. You will go broke and you will make the hot dog vendors mad at you because they will go broke too.

There is always a reward. The reward is feeling good about yourself for helping someone.
You are thinking about a monetary or material reward arent you?

It really doesn't matter what your religious or spiritual beliefs are .. there is always a reward for helping others!!!! I won't quote you pagan redes or bible verses ... but if you can't just feel good within yourself for helping someone else.. then you are a very sorry human being and I hope you find something, somewhere to help you past this selfish concept!
Blessed Be!

if there's is no reward, that means that we have done something good for others by the heart. people who want rewards are the ones who are bastardly greedy and want to think he is really useful...
remember, people who want to help people without needing to get a reward are those who will be highly rewarded in the future...

A person of high principles, integrity and character would not pass up an opportunity to help someone less fortunate. Those are the ones I aspire to be like and want to be mentored by. In some small way, I do want to make a difference in this world......... I want to leave the world a better place because of my having been here.

There's always a reward in this scenario even if it's just you feeling good about something you did. I was once at a gas station next to an older, obviously not-well-off gentlemen. He was near tears and offered that he was trying to buy enough gas to get to another city to visit with a dying relative. I had an extra $5 in my purse and offered it to him. He was so grateful that his "near tears" became actual tears. It made me feel good to have helped. Was I snookered? Maybe but I chose to believe I selflessly helped someone who needed it.

If helping others doesn't make you feel good, then don't do it. On the same note, if you aren't willing to help others, without expectation of a reward; then don't expect others to help you without being willing to reward them.
