Howdoes a '99 VW Beetle drive; particularly in the snow?

I found a used one for 7,995 with 75,000 miles on it.

I'm a bit weary as i'm looking for something with as few miles as possible; but this seems like a good bargain.

when everything is working they drive pretty good their snow manners are as good or slightly better than average note these cars are low to ground and ive seen them high centered in rough plowed snow
however with the problems these cars have had [especially the late 90,s models] everything from blower motor failures with multiple updates to, air bag failures, power window failures, nightmarish engine management failures ,rear brake calipers locking up excessive tire wear and so on who would want one these cars suck and they are time wasters in the service bay, even customer pay jobs on regularly serviced items are not worth while from the mechanics stand point as there too many better and yes easier cars to work on [this translates to lost wages for the tech and ridicules repair bills for the consumer] so don' t walk away from this RUN.

All Volkswagens drive beautifully. They are cars with good road holding and with excellent handling characteristics. They are driver friendly and very predictable to drive. Their handling in snow is comparable with any other fine quality car.
They need the same precautions which you would take with other cars while driving under adverse conditions.

VWs are sturdy and long lasting cars. If the previous owner has maintained it properly, she should be good for many more years to come. 75,000 miles on the clock should not unduly disturb you. Check the cars history and take it to a reputed VW workshop for a thorough check. If they give it a clean bill, go ahead and buy it. You will enjoy becoming a member of the Beetle Club and enjoy trouble free motoring as well. Good luck.

I have owned a New Beetle, Golf, and Jetta all with the same Gen IV chassis, and I found the Beetle performed the best in the snow.

With 16" tires, the Beetle could perform well and snow cleared and snow covered tires since most of the weight was well distributed and towards the bottom of the car.

The golf performed the worst because of front heaviness; the lack of trunk makes a huge difference. The jetta was okay, but on occassion slipped even with the ESL in place.

I wouldn't do it! 1999 Bugs are full of electrical problems- I know- I own one- and right now it's sitting in our garage after being hauled home for the second time in a week. Now my husband can't access the ECM to find out what the problem is! Please, for your sake- stay away from 1998-1999 NB's! I wish I had known this before we bought mine. Now it's too late- we've had problems with the thing from the first week we got it- starting with the check engine light- finally found the problem for that- now the ABS light is on all the time- and then it just quits for no reason every now and then. We bought it last year- and now I'm afraid it won't pass inspection because of whatever it causing the ABS light to be on.
