The job opportunities for control and automation engineers is, and always has been excellent.
We used to design and construct Oil and Gas processing plants, Chemical plants, Ore processing facilities, etc, etc., and each project had a team of Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, Piping, Civil, Chemical, and Control/Automation Engineers.
In many cases the Control/Automation Engineers held degrees in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering and had become Control Engineers because of expertise gained in the design of controls for the different processes involved in the projects.
