Are you talking about the new Heckler & Koch HK416 conversion for the M16 and M4?

It doesn't fire a larger round, still the 5.56 X 45mm NATO round.

There's an experimental prototype called the HK417 which uses the 7.62 X 51mm NATO round in development.

The great thing about this new conversion is that it fixes many of the problems of the original rifle and makes it less maintanence intensive in a desert environment. There's nothing like German engineering to solve problems that should have been fixed decades ago.

It's currently being used by US Army special operations and will eventually be used more widely.

Some US Special Forces Units are using M16 based guns (though using a more reliable action) that fire a larger bullet but the rest of the US military (including most Army and Marine units) get stuck with the unreliable junk that jams up constantly in the desert.

Though the 5.56 mm NATO round is actually pretty effective.

No such conversion has been made to date; the debate is still on going whether the 6.5 x45mm cartridge or the 6.8 x45mm cartridge should be adopted. You may have seen examples of one or both of these 'Test Product Improvement Program' used in field trials in the 'Sandbox' or in the 'Rockpile', however it has not yet been determined which one will be selected.

You are correct that the outside observer will not be able to tell these weapons apart from the M16/M4 5.56 x45mm version......

The US government and NATO have millions of 5.56 rds. They will wait a while before purchasing any other weapon that fires a different size round. All the US carries is M16A2, M16A4,M4 and some special weapons. All 5.56

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

You are misinformed.

While we have a few units using a conversion that fires a 6.8MM round, it is not in widespread use and it is not destined to be anytime in the near future.
