so lately we'll throw a treat and he has a hard time finding it. at first we just thought he was too exicted and was hyper ( he's a boston terrier ) then he started running into things like walls, cars, couches ect... today I noticed his eyes are getting white spots in them and are cloudy. I'm very upset and don't know what to do. he is only four years old. how long till he can't see anymore? and is there anything to prolong the blindness??

you should take him to the vet and have his eyes checked out. It sounds like he is devloping cataracts. Yes, its possible to happen in a 4 year old dog.. cataracts can be inherirted. The vet can diagnose the cause, and determine if there is any treatment to prolong/prevent blindness.

Its actually harder on you than it is on him. He will learn to adapt.. eventually he will learn to smell for the treats, and listen for them to land, rather than rely on sight. He will figure out where the walls and furntiture is.. and will soon move around the house like he did before. You just cant move the furniture around on him.

See a vet who specializes in opthomology.
There may be things that you can to do help save some of his sight.
Cataracts are one of the common things that can happen in certain breeds of dogs. It is one reason that you should have made sure your breeder had CERF certification done on his breeding stock.
I have a weim who has been blind since he was about 4-5 years old. He has cataracts as well as progressive retnial atrophy. He gets around good and does ok. He still enven gets to hunt alittle. He is about 11 now.
You just have to teach them to slow down so they do not crash so hard. We never move furniture and the dog has learned that whoa means to stop going forward. That way he does not crash into things.
Good luck.

Sounds like your dog is developing cataracts. These can some times be treated. You need have your dog looked at by a vet to determine all of your options.

If it is found that your dogs are not treatable here is some information that will help you with living with a blind a dog.

There are veterinary opthalmologists and eye specialists, some board certified. They are experts at knowing exactly what is wrong and have all the proper equipment to detect.

I personally have taken several different pets (cats/dogs) to one when they had growths, a cat scratched a dog and her eye turned white. Vet said it was common and gave me drops, said it would heal and go away within few weeks.
He was right.
So don't fret, till a vet specializing in eyes see your dog.
I just hope it's not a genetic predisposed thing with purebred Bostons.

In some dogs, it is genetics that cause these things. I think you should call his breeder, if you have info, and ask for more info on this pup's parents, and lineage.
*take your dog to the vet, and see if this is something that the vet thinks may be temporary, or progressing.
I saw on tv, that they are now making medical breakthroughs for dogs with certain eye conditions that cause blindness.
In some dogs, for instance, it is hereditary due to poor breeding, and some dogs inherit this trait.
they are now able to introduce healthy dna into these dogs' eyes, like a virus, and cure the blindness. I am sure it is quite expensive, and perhaps not availabe to everyone, just yet.

but just the same, please take your pup to the vet, and have him checked out.

I hope this goes well!!

Yes, he's probably going blind. From the sound of it (white spots), it's a cataract (which my dog has, and yes he runs into things) but you should check with a vet.

Surgery is possible, but we didn't opt for it because our pet is 12,5 years old and we don't want to torture him with that, just let him live out his days peacefully. Since your dog is young, this should be an option. Consult your vet.

I think you should see a vet about this! That's awfully sad for both you and your dog. But yes, a vet, or try a website designed with dogs/pets in mind and ask there. I hope he gets better! <3

Most likely he has juvenile cataracts. They are fixable but it costs more to fix in a dog than it does in a human.
Good luck.
