My hard drive died recently, I bought a new one, but the only copy of windows I have is the system recovery cd that came with the computer (a compaq)- and it's full of other programs i don't nees or want. Is there any way to get another copy of just the os without all the crap, and without buying a new copy?

Unfortunately, no - you will have to use the restore CD or buy a new copy.

Not to worry. There is a tool to remove all the junk that is installed with a new pc. Or at least a lot of it.
