The slim PS2 doesn't have as much cooling efficiency as the older, larger, PS2s. Playing a DVD causes the motor that spins the disc to be working harder (constantly spinning) than its regular intended purpose (as a gaming platflorm), causing slighlty more internal heat and wear and tear.
When you are playing a game, it loads information from the disc and then stops the motor, accessing the disc only when it needs new information.
In all honesty, it's not going to make much of a difference if you are just a moderate user of the system. PS2s are pretty rugged and the motors have a life of 4-5 years.
The only reason he may have mentioned this is if the system was already particularly old and well used, meaning he may have sold you one that was prone for failure in the future.

He does know what he's talking about, to a degree. When you're watching a DVD movie, you might fast forward or reverse quite a lot, which will wear down the track that the laser runs on. The laser doesn't run on air, so there's contact between the laser and the track, and as you know, the more you rub something against something else, the sooner it wears down.
The material that's used to make the PS2 isn't exactly the highest quality, so it does tend to wear down sooner.
If you're going to watch a lot of DVD movies, you're better off getting a DVD player than using the PS2 to watch movies, but if you only watch DVD movies once a day or less, go ahead and use the PS2 to watch DVD movies.
With DVD movies, the laser moves a lot because it has to read the different parts of the track to show the movie. With games, the gaming world is pre-loaded and the laser moves when it needs to load a different part of the world.

Just clean rental dvds before you put them in the system. If you do rent alot of games and movies --alot of the disc have scum on them so use a dvd lens cleaning disc in the ps2 once a month to clean the internal lens ---most of the disc read errors are caused by a dirty lens .....By the way most of the game jockies at the local game stores know very little about game hardware...

Im sorry but the guy who was telling you this maybe does not even own a PS2 and is a new person in the store.
If he owned one, he will know that these are made to take wear and tear, You can play them 24 hrs a day and it will stil work forever. They are practically indestructible.
Ok maybe that is exaggerated, but yes, everyone plays |DVDs there as well.
