for the past few months my flat mates have gone out and randomly stolen road signs and island cones whcih they leave in our hall..
..They have now gathered together a total of 9 signs and since last night one huge island cone.

isn't this illegal?

the hall is so full of stupid signs and my talking to them isnt getting through to them.

how can i make them realise what they are doing is wrong... dirting up the house and taking up what little floor space we have in the hall?

Well, the obvious choice is to go to the police... but your flatmates will probably be angry at you for doing that... but you have to think about how they're endangering the safety of others.

The signs are placed where they are needed to control traffic with, when some idiot removes these signs and takes them away, they are placing hundreds of innocent motorists lives at risk. How will your flat mates feel if they find out that the signs they have been stealing caused an accident which killed a mother and her three little children because they didn't know they were suspose to stop at the cross roads and didn't and got plowed into by a tractor trailer, killing her and the children?

Will your friends still think it is so neat to remove these signs from the roadway?

What happens if instead of the mother and the three little girls, its their own brothers or sisters that get killed or injured because some idiot stole the warning sings off the corner, causing the deadly accident?

Think before you do anything, is the best solution!

Yes illegal

They are possibly endangering road users by removing the signs.

You could get in trouble yourself for knowing they are and involved.

It must be murder driving round your hall!

Of course it's illegal - it's theft.

Why not just throw them out? No, the signs, not the flatmates.

Sell the stuff on EBAY and make a profit. People will buy anything on EBAY!! Especially gutless wannabees, who would love to steal a sign but cant do it.
Then with the money you make, donate it to LIFE international, to feed and give water to the poor people around the world.

Just say "Listen guys, the first time it was funny. But enough is enough with the cones! Get rid of them or I will call the police."

Be nice, but firm.

it is illegal and it sounds like your flat mates need to grow up, do they drink when they steal these items? could you possibly find somewhere else to live as if these get in trouble with the law, will they believe you that you arent involved too!!

what about the roads? I'd be more worried about the problems this will cause to safety etc...what if they're diversion signs?

yes it is illegal
and if the police ever did need to visit your house even for a different reason and they see them in the house then you all could get in to trouble.
ask him to move them out and to stop doing it

I did that all the time ...when I was in High School. We used to still those fake rocks that the city used to cover up pipes and stuff. Stupid thing to do but it was fun at 3 in the morning when u had nothing else to do. We used to leave it in random neighbors gardens not take them to our house. Tell them if they have to steal, to leave it on random neighbors porches or something..then you don't have a bunch of useless crap...but it's still fun.
