Holy means totally consecrated to God or set apart for a special purpose or cause. The word sanctified is closely related to holy. Basically, this means that you have committed everything about yourself to Jesus, even your own personal identity, so that he may mold and shape you as willing clay, into that mature saint that he wants you to be. Personally, I have experienced what it means to be holy. I have had to give up things in life (though God does always replace these with better, more wholesome things). Since I am set apart for his use (synonymous to being saved and sanctified), I must keep myself clean from the "pollution" of this world. This means friends that I would nomally hang out with I must refuse, because their lifestyles are in direct conflict to mine, and I can not chance being corrupted by their evil ways (of course, I am not telling you to be a hermit, LOL, just watch who you hang with and their influences). Also, I must dress a certain way to conform to the modesty that God requires. Even though I enjoy looking fashionable (for lack of a better guy-oriented word) , I can not and will not lower my standards for the latest fad. I must do what the bible tells me in every situation, such as abstaining from fornication and loving my enemy. The list goes on, but basically holiness means a set apart way of behaving (according to the Word), that is obviously different from the common way, or else it would not be able to be called holy in the first place. Note that to be considered holy, you must have the approval of God, you can not just say that you are holy, you must "be" holy. Also note that holiness is an ongoing proccess, since the Holy Ghost reveals, as time goes by, what pleases him and what sins you are committing unintentionally (In other words, no one should expect a baby to walk the first day, it takes time to learn, and so does holiness)

Holy is an adjective and means "wholly"; it is from the original Greek word "Hagios", it points to a life where you wholly give your life for the good of God and others, but beacuse we are human, this is done imperfectly:

"Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her." - Revelation 18:20.

It means asking God to walk with you everyday. With God beside you, you are truly fearless. There is no mountain you can't climb. The spirit will snowball to a point where you can't help but praise his name. It means casting aside the things that take away from joy in your life.
