I realize this question may seem a little absurd, but I'm actually serious. My best friend is visiting from out of town and she always tells me that between her dog's paw pads it smells like corn chips. We figure her dog can't be the only one, right?

Also, if you do know of a dog in a similar situation, anyone know why the corn chip smell?

Thanks!

You should try dipping his feet in salsa, and then licking it off, it might cure it.

I have never smelled a dog's feet, but if I had, I wouldn't be posting it all over the internet for everyone to read it, LMHO!

It's typically called "Frito Feet." It's natural, many dogs have it, and it is caused by the unique scent glands that dogs have in their feet. They use these glands for marking their territory (i.e. after they "go").

Yep. It's probably just dog sweat that dries and smells like corn chips, as well as the scent glands in their pads. You don't have to stick your nose down by their paws to smell it. If their feet get anywhere near your face, you can smell it. Or maybe I'm the only one who can smell it, because I have a very keen sense of smell. BTW, some humans' feet smell like corn chips when they've been sweating in their shoes all day. Gross, yes... but true.

That's pretty funny, actually. Think about it. There are a lot of things that smell worse than corn chips!

There's no way I'm sniffing my dogs' paws to find out ... so I'll have to take your word for it. Meantime, pass the dip!

This question has been asked before. I answered that one too. I smelled my dog's paws and they didn't smell like anything. I have also heard they smell like popcorn. I am really curious to know if anyone really has the right answer to this question. It's very interesting. If I wasn't so lazy I would research it.........

my dogs paws also smell like popcorn, the reason for this is because the only place the dogs sweat from is in their paws and this is what causes the smell, that you can compare to chips.

We have two dogs, but they are big German Shepherds and I would be afraid to smell between their paw pads.

As far as corn chips, everyone knows dogs love them... ;)

yup, have actually known several people wiht this exact dilema!!! and yes they have ALL used corn chips to describe the smell...this can be helped a bit by keeping the hairs in between the pads shaved & clean....basically its from being dirty, you know like if you forget to put on deodorant, your arms pits are pressed together making a warm place for smell to develope....some dogs have it worse than others just like some people suffer from worse BO than others....keeping their feet trimmed/shaved also helps to keep from bringing in so much dirt & water when coming from outside...if you dont want to do it yourself a groomer wil be happy to do it for you ..if you want them "very" clean ask fro "poodle feet"...they wil be very short @ first & maybe look a little odd if your dog has longer hair but they will grow out in about a week kinda like a new haircut & then they look very neat & clean.....I liek em I giev my pug poodle feet regularly

I have to tell you, seeing this question made me LAUGH. Thanks. :)

...and the reason is that my ridgeback TOTALLY has corn chip patas and everytime I tell people that they look at me like I'm crazy. I don't know if it's for sniffing my dog's feet, or if it's because I think it smells like corn chips. But it does!!

(By the way, how sad is it that anyone would be scared to smell their own dog's feet? :( Not wanting to is one thing, but being scared to is awful.)

my dogs have stinky little frito feet too!

I think its because they sweat from their pads, they also have scent glands in their feet.. its a mixture of the salty smell from the sweat and from the scent glands

Also, my dogs do not eat crappy food that contains corn! I avoid food and treats with corn because it make's Fred's skin break out more.. he still gets frito feet.
