I was lying in bed, dog at my side, cat by my head, and started to stroke the cat, (six year old short hair, second day of having him from the ASPCA) and he did his usual head-butts of love. He laid back down, so I started to scratch my dog, (13 year old, chihuahua/boston terrier mix, had her since she was 8 weeks old) and my cat got PISSED! He meowed very loudly repeatedly, and ran up to me and bit my cheek, I tried to calm him down and he charged me again, swiping at me. I stood up, and stared him down while voicing my disapproval of his actions. He just kept meowing loudly, then he just clicked back to his normal happy purring self. Almost like he had some kind of Bi-polar episode or something.

Cat is male, dog is female. Was this just an extreme jealousy snap or what?

I've had the same issue from a cat who saw herself as my mother/protector. Anytime I would leave for more than a week or so she felt she had to have "her time" with me. This consisted of 24 hours of my undivided attention. If anyone attempted to take this time away from her she would attack. First time she started this was at about 7 years old when she attacked my husband. (He was my boyfriend at the time and still fairly new to her) She's never been a mean cat but for some reason she felt the need to either protect me or reclaim me. I can never be sure which one. She also did the same thing to my son when we first brought him home from the hospital. To this day she still finds the need to do this at certain points when she feels neglected. She like your cat can also go right back to normal after an episode like this. I'd take it as a compliment, but I'd do what I could to prevent you and your other animals from getting hurt when this happens. If he has another episode like this you can do what I do with my cat. Put him in a form of "time out". By this I mean lock him in a single room with his food, water, and litter box for an hour or so and give him some time to cool off. Generally when we do this with my cat she is calmed down and happy to see everyone by the time she come out. Good luck!

You must be a really nice person to adopt a 6 yr old cat. Most people want kittens so they can get to know them and bring them up their way. You have no idea where that cat was or what he's been through. I'd be wondering why the other people gave him up. Is your cheek bitten badly? You'll probably need a tetanus shot if you aren't already protected. I hope he doesn't bite your dog. I have no idea what might have caused this but from now on maybe only have one of them on the bed at a time.

It could be jealousy or the cat could just be still adjusting to being in a new house. When you get a new animal, you should introduce them to other animals very gradually so they don't get sensory overload and explode or get so frightened that they start hissing and spitting and scratching.

When the cat does anything aggresive like that, leave it and go out of the room. Let it know that you are not going to put up with that sort of behavior. If this doesn't help, you may want to pet them separately while the other isn't in the room.

Ha thats a new one for me.. I have 4 cats and 3 dogs and that has never occured. I really am at a loss.. I would say you need to lay down the law for kitty... my cats would never bite me like that! lol I dont know but maybe it was redirected aggression of some kind?? Perhaps the cat has had bad past experiences in such a situation as that...

Jealosy. You were paying attention to him and then turned to the dog too quick, taking his attention away, which he really wanted.

Next time give more of a time break between one and the other. You can talk to the dog as you're petting the cat, but don't pet both at once or right after each other.

Yup i think you have jealousy there or you accidently lent on her as you were patting your dog.

If it happens again, you could spray her with some water they hate it and if you back it up with a loud NO! she will get the idea.

And good for you for adopting a ASPCA animal :)

good what i might do is positioned saleen and stewart in a room in combination and that i might positioned mist in a different one considering the fact that she does not get in conjunction with the cat, or i might simply pu misty and saleen in a room and permit stewart roam the condominium.
