I need to renew my pet license and to do this, I need to take him to the vet and get a rabies vaccine. How much will this cost? I have no idea, he's my first pet. He's in good health otherwise.

I definitely HAVE enough money to take him. I'm just curious about how much I should anticipate spending. It's not a financial problem, I'm just new at this!

This will vary greatly depending on where you live and what kind of vet you choose.

City vets cost more than rural vets. Some vets are very cheap. You can go there if you are only going this one time for one vaccine. Some vets are more pricey. If you are looking to establish a good relationship with a vet that can look after your pet for years and help him in case anything would happen, then I would suggest you not go with the cheapest vet you can find. Ask friends and neighbors who they go to. Call around to different vets and ask questions. Find a vet you like, that you are comfortable with, that seems knowledgeable, has an empathy for animals (especially your particular species - not all dog vets are good with cats), and is within your price range.

To more directly answer your question, if you were to come to my clinic, the exam is $43, the rabies vaccine is $20, the license fee is $6, and we would probably strongly suggest/require a distemper vaccine ($23). We would also probably recommend a Feline leukemia and FIV combo test ($53) based on his age and history, and possibly have you come back in a month for a feline leukemia vaccine ($23) (we like to separate our vaccines so as not to overwhelm the cat's immune system).

Probably $50-$100 tops. Rabies is a general vaccine that they want all pets to get. Like spay/neuter. Cost depends on where you live and how fancy the vets office is. I had blood work done on my 18 year old cat and that was $238.00 which is ALOT!!!!!! If your kitty is going to stay inside all the time you probably don't even need to vaccinate. Like my other cat, he's inside 24/7 so feline lukemia testing is on the list before rabies vacination. Does that help? Enjoy your new furry friend!

He'll likely get an exam and then the shot. Exams here in my city with my vet are $35 and the rabies shot, which is a one year (not the three year) is $12.

Call and ask your vet what their prices are. West coast would be higher in cost than the midwest here, but each city varies somewhat. All vets are up front about standard prices.

A lot of areas have a vaccination "clinic" where the rabies shot is around $12.00. In my area, the veterinarian opens her office for 3 hours every Saturday for vaccinations only. This way people do not have to pay for the "vet visit" on top of the shots.

It varies from vet to vet. If you live in the US there are low cost rabies clinics at different places and they usually have a sign up advertising it. You can also check out this site:

Some of the low cost spay and neuter clinics also offer low cost rabies shots so you could call one of them and ask.

Also, you can go to google and type in:

rabies clinic and your town or state

to get some sites with reduced cost rabies clinics.

im not really sure how much it is.. and i know you are a good pet owner, and i beleive you when you say your cat is healthy.. but just a word of advice to you.. if you can't afford to pay for your pet, you shouldn't have one. just to let you know in the future. if you can't pay for your pet, its better to give him to a nice loving home that can pay for him.. just letting you know in the future, just in case anything happens.. its better for the pet.
