I think you overreacted. All that was necessary was a simple "Excuse me, please", and she would have apologized and moved. Happens all the time. People do rude things often without realizing it. If you are polite to them, they will usually react accordingly. Think of it this way: How would you have reacted if she had said, "Sorry I am thinner than you, but I still need to get my receipt"? Just because she's thin didn't give you the o.k. to compare bodies. Some people are sensitive about such things.

I think she perhaps mistakenly thought that you were finished, since you were putting your purse in the cart, and moved up to the register. I'm not sure that it had anything to do with anyone's weight. In the future if this happens, I hope you'll simply say, "Sorry, I didn't get my receipt yet," and say excuse me as you reach for the receipt.

People who invade my space in line annoy me too!
I put my stuff on the conveyor and stand at the end with my basket in front of me, making sure not to crowd the one in front of me. As my stuff moves up making a space at the back, the person in back of me actually bumps me repeatedly putting a few of their things on the belt.
Annoyed looks, frowns, whatever, have never worked on these rude people. I always have to say something like, Excuse me, I'd prefer you not touching me.
Then THEY get all affronted that I said anything!
Whatever happened to personal space? It used to be a persons arms reach.

I think she was probably thinking that your remark had
some alternative meaning; maybe some hidden ulter-
ior motive.
People can be strange. And it takes all kinds to make
a world. But, don't let it worry you. My vote in any sort
of situation between a fat and thin person would be for
the fat. (Especially when they're the more honest one
of the two!)

I hate it when people do that, get all impatient and invade your personal space and whatnot. I think you were too nice...I would have glared at the woman until she moved back to her own spot.

If she scooted away it was her problem not yours. I hate it when someone behind me tries to rush me.

she sounds like an uptight biddy, aren't you so glad you have a sense of humor and easy going?
next time tell her, "it must be so hard to be you".
