nosnod - I apologise if you think this question is one of hatred. It was not meant to come across as that maybe you should not be so defensive and be a little more open minded.....

Jesus' complete statement is "If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."

Of course, any striking is a painful blow, but the striking in this case is meant as a gross insult (cf. 2 Corinthians 11:20).

If a right-handed person strikes someone's right cheek, presumably it is a slap by the back of the hand. A fist striking you would be on the left cheek. So this teaching by Jesus is not about self-defense, but about an attack on your dignity.

In the eastern culture slapping someone is considered an insult of the highest order. But Jesus says that His disciples should gladly be willing to endure the insult again.

Also by offering your other cheek to your persecutor you are showing the whole world the injustice of his attack on you, same as walking an extra mile with him or handing over more than was demanded highlights the unfairness.

Christians are permitted to defend themselves and their families (Exodus 22:2; Numbers 1:2-3; Ecclesiastes 4:12; Luke 22:36; Acts 22:1; 25:10-11; 2 Timothy 4:16) and to use God-ordained authority to keep evil from harming them or others (Proverbs 28:8; Acts 16:37-39; 22:23-29).

However, what is forbidden is the taking of vengeance (Romans 12:17-21), bitterness (Ephesians 4:31), and retaliation (1 Peter 2:23). These are absolutely forbidden by Jesus and the apostles.

Depends on whether it is "offensive" because it violates the community guidelines or because I just don't like what the person said.

The former isn't only right, it is our responsibility as members of this community to do our part to make sure people abide by the guidelines. The latter is wrong...primarily because it violates the spirit if not the letter of the community guidelines. Turn the other cheek certainly should be a consideration for Christians, but only for them...abusing the reporting system is a no-no for everyone.

BTW, I don't run around playing rules police. I can only think of three times I've reported someone back when I first started on here...all were for deliberate rules violations...then I realized that some people were making notches on their monitor for every account they could get suspended for violations...I stopped playing along then!

I only did that once, because the person was very racist. I think everybody has to have common sense. This is not meant to be misused. Disrespectful language, mockery and insults should really be reported. If there is no rule, it will be no fun, people can really be mean. However, I was reported once for expressing my opinion. I was not offensive, but someone got offended, oh well. We all have to be mature enough to handle this. This is nothing to do with giving the other cheek. Don't take it too literally! To live in society we need to obey the Law. This is not different.

Peace!

Turning the other cheek is a spritual descision and practical. If someone takes your jacket, give him your coat too is what Jesus said. Whomever uses you, spitefully, do good to them.

Should you report violations, that is your decision. Paul was a Roman citizen and exercised his rights of citizenship. You may do the same.

As long as it is a Freedom of Speech issue, you must abide by it, even if you do not like it. If it violates a tenant of Yahoo code of conduct and you are compelled to report it you are within your rights to do so.

Try reading the actual Bible more about this issue, in Acts chapter 2.

Good Luck.

In the big scope of things, is a question on Y&A worth dying over? Probably not. If some terrorist comes to your neighborhood, kicking in the doors, is that worth dying for? Yea. You can't negotiate for long with them. What is a real offense and what isn't? Be cognizant enough to know what is important, and what isn't. Who cares on the stupid shi*? You shouldn't. We got bigger, stinker fish to fry. And it is coming. Thicken your skin.

While I have commented on people's rude comments and even been given a violation for saying some one was rude I have not given a violation. I do not find it has the desired effect and limits conversation.

yes it IS right to do this! We are responsible for the well being of others. There are children here!..(you must be one of em since you asked this question) But I personally dont rat on people. And what does Jesus -OUR LORD AND SAVIOR-have 2 do with it anyway. Its not a matter of turning the other cheek. Its a matter of getting rid of stupid people who want to act a fool and mess with somebody really bad. I overlook most crap here but NOT the really bad things.
And please dont use Jesus' name this way. It is NOT funny.

Good question. If it is because of what is done to you you should turn the other cheek but if it is harmful to the children or offensive to women then it's not done to you report it .
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

It doesn't apply to every single life circumstance, as much as you wish it did.

1 Corinthians 3 says unbelievers can't understand nor properly interpret the Bible.

Nevertheless, I don't give violations personally. I get some from atheists, though, and almost always see them overturned LOL
