Do you have to be a US citizen to join the National Guard? I've heard National Guard soldiers referred to as citizen-soldiers, but I didn't even know you had to be a citizen to join. I'm pretty sure you don't have to be a citizen to join the active duty Army because they have a program to help active duty Army soldiers become citizens. If you don't have to be a US citizen to join the National Guard: 1. What percentage of its soldiers are not citizens. 2. Why are they called citizen-soldiers?

They are citizen-soldiers in honor of their militia roots -- dating back to 1603.

A non-citizen can join the National Guard. In fact, doing so can help you secure citizenship, just like joining the active Army can.

It is almost impossible to tell what percentage of Guardsmen are non-citizens. Not only do the 50 states keep separate records, but the long term of enlistments in the Guard, usually 8 years, means that non-citizens who enlist will be citizens at some point during their enlistment, usually around year 6.

Tracking down the number of non-citizen enlistees, minus the number of naturalized enlistees, over 50 different states is a huge task.

And don't forget the territories either, they have NG too.
