No body can say for sure what your unit will do, but I suspect even if you do a tour in Iraq you won't be the guy on TV walking down the streets of Bagdad ducking into doorways. You might do watch on an airforce base of operations.

g-day!

Depends on what you mean by "fighting" I heard recently that the Air Force does have some ground troops, but they're special forces types... Not sure how accurate that information is.

But, if you choose a non-infantry occupation, you'll be doing whatever that job is, wherever you're stationed... and also when you're deployed.

My son is a Marine in a non-infantry MOS and he's been deployed... and didn't fight at all. He went there and did the job he's great at, which is doing electrical work on Marine Corps Helo's... So it really depends on the job you select.

My advice?? DO NOT sign an "open" contract.. make SURE you have selected a job specialty that will use and increase your current skills and aptitudes. Open Contract typically means you get stuck doing what nobody will sign up for... which is always a bad idea.

If your worried about coming to Iraq, then why join?

What are the reasons your enlisting? To fight to preserve the rights we hold dear as citizens of the United States, or are you joining to get the good bonus and college money? Do you personally care about causes that are bigger then you, or are you just passing the time till something better comes along?

Whether or not you come here to Iraq is totally dependant on where the war is at the time you graduate BMT. If you are truly concerned about whether or not you are coming to Iraq or not, then its my opinion you need to re-evaluate why you are joining a branch of the US Armed forces to start with.

If you were unlucky enough to go to Iraq (and that's not a given, the Air Force is pretty big and the effort in Iraq is not), you probably stil wouldn't "fight".

The cool thing about the Air Force is that with a very few exceptions, the enlisted guys stay back and send the officers out to fight.

Will you have to fight? In the Air Force?

No.

You might have to play golf in Iraq. But fight, no. Not unless you are a pilot.

Enjoy the tour. Iraq is one of the world oldest and most interesting civilizations. A year there after high school is a pretty cool thing.

If you're thinking about joining the Air Force, being deployed to Iraq should be of your the least worries. The Air Force only deploy for 4 to 6 month tours, and if you want to stay a year, you have to volunteer for it.So don't worry, while you get ready to deploy to Iraq, the Army Soldiers and Marines will have your back(since we do most of the work out here anyway)

Go Army

I would not be too worried about going to Iraq, even if you do, the Air Force is not on the front line. The Air Force in Iraq is usually stationed on a base, they usually do not leave the base unless they want to. This of course depends on your MOS in the Air Force, but I would not worry to much. Good luck at bmt, the Air Force bmt is cake.

BMT = BELIEVE-ME-THEIR IS A MARINE THAT WILL GO..................BY THE WAY, WHY DID YOU JOIN?

All branches are involved now. The AF is now patrolling roads in Iraq for IED's. The Marines and Army were tired of watching the other branch's do hardly anything and still reaping all the glory and not the casualties to go with it. You will have fun patrolling Mobil and Michigan.

On our Base*Air Force*, Most of the Troops do deploy... Although they usually deploy to other countries besides Iraq.. Here it's more of a volunteer deployment... I'm not saying that you will or will Not go to Iraq... It will all depend upon the job you have and if they need you there... Good Luck.. And thanks for serving our Great country...

The odds are statistically against it. If you don't want to fight in wars, don't join the military.
