There are many Old Testament prophecies about Jesus Christ. Some interpreters place the number of Messianic prophecies in the hundreds. Following are those that are considered the clearest and most important. Regarding Jesus’ birth: Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isaiah 9:6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Micah 5:2, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."

Concerning Jesus' ministry and death: Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Psalm 22:16-18, “Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.”

Likely the clearest prophecy about Jesus, and definitely the longest, is the entire 53rd chapter of Isaiah. Isaiah 53:3-7, “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.”

The “seventy sevens” prophecy in Daniel chapter 9 predicted the precise date that Jesus, the Messiah, would be “cut off.” Isaiah 50:6 accurately describes the beating that Jesus endured. Zechariah 12:10 predicts the “piercing” of the Messiah, which occurred after Jesus died on the cross. Many more examples could be provided, but these will suffice. The Old Testament most definitely prophesies the coming of Jesus as the Messiah.

He was the "seed of a woman" -- prophecy: Genesis 3:15 and fulfilled: Galatians 4:4.

He was a descendent of Abraham -- prophecy: Genesis 12:3 and fulfilled Matthew 1:1.

He was from the tribe of Judah – prophecy: Genesis 49:10 and fulfilled: Luke 3:33.

He was the heir to the throne of David – prophecy: Isaiah 9:7 and fulfilled Luke 1:32-33.

His birth place in Bethlehem – prophecy: Micah 5:2 and fulfilled: John 1:2, Luke 2:4-5, 7.

Born of a virgin – prophecy: Isaiah 7:14 and fulfilled: Luke 1:26-27, 30-31.

There are 191 prophecies in the Old Testament regarding the coming of the Messiah. Jesus fits EVERY SINGLE ONE of these prophecies! There are prophecies of his ancestry and lineage, the city in which he would be born (Bethlehem), precisely the time in history when he would die, and that he would be raised from the dead!

Some of the most striking prophecies to me are the prophecies in the book of Psalms (one mentioned is from Zechariah). Psalm 41:9 prophesized that a close friend would betray him. Zechariah 11:13 says that he would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver. Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver! Psalm 22:16 says that the Messiah would be pierced through the hands and feet. There is a detail that must be mentioned... This was prophesized hundreds of years before Jesus was born, at this time crucifixion had not even been invented! Nobody would have been able to explain this prophecy at the time it was prophesized! Psalm 22:14 says that his bones would be out of joint. Jesus' bones were out of joint on the cross! Verse 15 says that he will thirst at the time of his death. Later in Psalm 69:21 it is prophesized that he will be offered vinegar for his thirst. Guess what? Jesus was offered vinegar on the cross for his thirst. Psalm 22:22 says that he will declare God's name. Jesus declared God on the cross! Psalm 22:18 even tells us that evil men will cast lots for his clothing. The Roman soldiers did cast lots on his clothing leaving him virtually naked on the cross! And to think, most of these prophecies come from one chapter of one book in the Bible!
Another extremely amazing example of prophecy comes from the book of Isaiah. Isaiah 53:2-12 foretells 12 aspects of the Messiah - He would be rejected, be a man of sorrow, live a life of suffering, be despised by others, carry our sorrow, be smitten and afflicted by God, be pierced for our transgressions, be wounded for our sins, would suffer like a lamb, would die with the wicked, would be sinless, and would pray for others. JESUS FULFILLS ALL OF THESE!

Here are a few. But dont think of the Old Testament and the New Testament as separate books. Sure they were written at extremely different times, but that is one of the reasons we can be so sure of their accuracy.

There are tons of them.

Micah 5:2

Jeremiah 31:15

Hosea 11:1

There are many, many specific prophecies about Jesus. People like to pretend this is not so, but they are valid prophecies and were written hundreds of years before Jesus. BTW to the replier who will say Jesus never existed, even Einstein said he did, besides Josephus (altered and unaltered texts), along with others. Time April 2007 has Einstein mentioning how amazing Jesus was although he did not necesarrily believe He was the Savior that He was.

Isaiah 61
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor

Jesus said these words:
Luke 4
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

One thing that cought the people there off guard was that Jesus stopped reading at a point where Isaiah 61 went on in the second half of verse 2:
"and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,"

Why? Because it wasn't time yet for the Day of Vengeance. The Day of Vengeance is described in Zechariah 12 and 14.
