If your high school has a "Key Club," you could join that. I was in Key Club in high school. Many high schools have a Key Club, in which its members do community service, like beach cleanups, handing out water at marathons, tutoring kids, etc.

It depends on what you want to do. You could start by doing a food drive or a toy drive around Christmas that will go to a local shelter or to needy kids at you school. Talk to your principal, he/she may try a race between homerooms to see who can provide the most items. You can also do a pet drive like this. Pounds are in need of things like newspapers, bleach, cat/dog food, collars, etc. Talking to your principal can be a big help. Maybe there is someone in your school who has a life-threatening illness/disease, find out what it is and have a Hat Week or Jeans Day to raise money. Jeans days only work if you have a dress code, but Hat Weeks usually raise a lot of money. Each homeroom teacher charges the students $.50 to wear a hat every day for a week and then the homeroom that raises the most money gets to choose someone to pie the principal in the face. If you have a local soup kitchen you could probably volunteer there, I'm not sure how old you have to be, it varies by state. Good luck!!!

Go to an area nursing home and sit with patients that don't usually get visits. You may learn all lot in the process. Also you could consider helping at a local shelter and help serve meals, a local community center and help with the younger kids, or offer free babysitting to a single mother.
