The buttercream frosting recipe I have calls for milk and flour to be boiled together and cooled and then added to granulated sugar instead of powdered sugar and vanilla. It tastes very custardy and isn't overly sweet. Another frosting you didn't mention is cooked in a double boiler over boiling water for 7 minutes. It's called 7-Minute Frosting or 7-Minute Icing (I've seen it called both) and it has the flavor of marshmallows. It is wonderful over a chocolate cake and looks beautiful on the cake because it is egg-white based and makes those wonderful swirls. You can even sprinkle coconut on it and have it over a coconut cake.

Whipped cream icing is like cool whip, etc. and is typically used on pies, and cakes. Butter cream icing can be used on just about anything....I use it on cinnamon rolls, cakes, and sugar cookies (pretty much anything I need to frost and it can also be made chocolate). I'm not sure, but I think boiled white frosting and royal frosting may be stiiffer types that are good for decorating.

butter cream is beaten up with butter and icing sugar much sweeter than whipped cream whipped cream is much nicer in sponge cakes and you could have a chocolate fudge frosting on top of a chocolate cake with the whipped cream in the centre . boiled white frosting and royal icing is more for special occassion cakes such as a Xmas or wedding fruit cake where you might want to decorate the top after the plain icing is smoothed on. I buy my icing in the super markets when making xmas or wedding cakes which come in a block and you then roll it out to the size of your cake. here in Australia it's called orchard icing

Beat on extreme for 4 minutes.
