The P-38 was brilliant but not needed now. An Amy travels on its stomach so I would vote for MREs since humping cans and the weight is the basic thing. Clothing and such changes as that is an issue in all eras. The basic woobie.... yes!
All the tech yes as well. But in the end it comes down to basics. A good knife, being warm, food and a super reliable weapon. The 1911 .45 has survived almost a 100 years and there is a reason for that. It works and is reliable no matter what is duty issue now or what has been tried in the past.
And gear is not the main thing...... training methods and ones brain is the best gear ever made.

The Poncho, it has been around since the Continental Army and has a thousand uses. I was a bit disappointed when they came out with the current ones made of thin flimsy rubber. Back in the day, we had a tough thick OD Green ponchos. Don't cross the line of departure without one.
In 24 years with the US Cavalry, I've never heard of a poncho liner being called a "woobie". Woobie? Sounds like a sesame street character.

While I truly love the woobie (aka poncho liner), I have to vote for its close cousin -- the cold weather parka liner.
The cold weather parka liner was a woobie-like material that could be attached to the inside of a parka, a field jacket or work under a BDU shirt.
It assured warmth in all conditions, even when it was not possible to wrap onself in a poncho liner.

Two things, both created by the same man. The Model 1911A1 .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol and the M2 .50 caliber heavy machine gun. Both are still in service with all or some part of our military almost a century after they were invented. Good, tough, simple, powerful guns.

Me. 21 years of military. In my prime I was one fine piece of hardware. But that was a long time ago. Other then that I would have to say the Ballistic Missile Submarine. It helped spend the Russians into oblivion.

The camel back.
It lets you carry more water then the standard issue two quart canteen and is located in a more convienant location, on one's back, then being awkardly situated on someones hip.
