The only things this accomplishes is to make the peach slices sweeter,as if they would need it. . . . . . . AND. . . . . . .
it makes them A LOT more FATTENING! ! ! ! !
Some people think this will keep them from discoloring, like apples, but only lemon juice will actually do this.

Sprinkling sugar on sliced fresh peaches will make them sweet. Let set a few hours in the frig. It will bring out some juices. Would be great for Peach Shortcake or a Peach Cobbler.
To prevent the peaches from turning brown add some *Fruit Fresh* to some water and slice the peaches in the water....then drain. Fruit Fresh works on all fresh fruits.

It will not cause any problems. If you store them in a refrigerator for a day or two the juices will accumulate at the bottom of the bowl. This was my favorite as a child. Take angel food cake, cover with the sliced peaches and then drench the whole thing in the juices, MMM!. Also if you are planning to store the sliced peaches in the freezer, sprinkling sugar on them helps to prevent them from sticking so much so they are easier to break apart and eat while still frozen, another of my favorites as a child.

It makes them even sweeter than they naturally are and the sugar draws some of their juice out. Are you thinking about the fact that sliced peaches turn brown? That's caused by exposure to air, not the sugar. You can delay that browning action by adding a little lemon or orange juice when you toss in the sugar.

MMMMM. In addition to making them sweeter, sugar is a preservative. It also, keeps the nice fresh color of the peaches.

It makes the peaches sweeter -- that's all.
If the peaches are ripe and sweet in the first place, it's unneccessary. These days, though, you are more likely to find unripe ones at the grocery store.
