Because postage has always been expensive
and decent writing paper and envelopes
do not come cheap either
its a fitting tribute to a very dear[as in price]
hobbie allround and the service you get isnt always
100% effective or reliable either
train up a few pigeons and use them its cheap cheap

Just a standard formality. It's only a must for
a business letter of some sort or other.
If you want to write a friendly letter, though, it
would just as well to start it: "Greetings...", or
"Hey, how's it going..."
