OK, threatening the kid straight might be a good idea. But can you give him some alternatives? What kind of life can he lead if he goes straight, works hard and stays good?
There's not such a prejudice as there was in the old days of our grandparents, say. If he can work hard in high school and college, he can get out of the country and do all sorts of things. The military is also an option for seeing the world -- but I think you can't get into the military if you have a felony record. My dad was in the military.
If he can get a degree, he can teach English overseas, which is an amazing experience. People won't be prejudiced because he's black -- although they may be prejudiced because he's American (-:. But that's part of broadening the mind.
Living in prison, your options are really, really limited. You have to do what other people say, all the time. And not just the guards, but the Alpha Prisoners who boss the others around. Just look at the movies! It's not a great life! At least outside of prison, you can move away from a bad situation, or maybe reason with the authorities (I know that doesn't always work in real life, but how often does it work in prison?)
I know this wasn't exactly the answer you were looking for; I hope you find what you need -- I hope your nephew finds what he needs to lead a life HE controls -- not a life some gang leader or bully controls for him.

This relates to the California prison system, not sure if other states are the same. About 90% of inmates are in gangs. That is prison gangs, not street gangs. They are seperated by race. There is a blood in blood out rule in them. You have to shed somebodies blood to get in and your own to get out(meaning you die). Prison is based on respect. If anybody does anything to disrespect you(like walking through your area of the yard) you have to handle it(beat them or stab them). Something this small WILL get you stabbed. And it is not the gang leaders doing it. It is the little guys like your nephew. The leaders will send them on a "mission" to stab the other guy. If you don't, you get stabbed. So, if you do, then you spend the next year or so in solitary(23 hours a day by yourself in an 8'x12' cell). If you don't, you get stabbed with a pencil, a sharp toothebrush or slashed with a razor. Also, if anybody in your race gets into a fight with anybody(including gaurds) you MUST get involved. If you don't, you get stabbed. The only way to get out of fighting for your race is to give out sexual favors. If you want to do that, whenever and wherever your leaders want, you can get out of fighting. But then you get passed around from man to man and will most likely get AIDS or Hep C. Here's the greta part about prison gangs. Even if you are the top dog, they can and will turn on you. Do something they don't like and they will get rid of you(kill you or maim you). Those are the basics of prison life, beside being told when to eat, drink and go to the bathroom. The food sucks, the beds suck and everybody around you is a predator. Show weakness one time for a second and you are a target for beatings, extortion and rape. Sounds like fun right? Oh ya. And the way the system is set up, if you make it out, more than half go back. So, chances are, go once and it's a revolving door. If you want to know more, let me know.

Ok, nephew, you may be thinking that it will not be that bad, but take a little while to check out some of the questions on here. A lot has to do with where convicts can get a job, How can they get their records expunged(erased)and the like. Once you have a criminal record, even for something minor, it can and will affect you for the rest of your life. If you do not want to be condemned to working for fast-food joints, if you can get a job there, for the rest of your life you will stay out of trouble. Your street cred means nothing to me, and is not a way to impress people who really matter. As a matter of fact, I will look down on you and have no respect.

Prison is no joke, people who have not been or even seen a jail will try to tell you that they are soft because the feed you, but it is anything but. Yes you get 3 meals a day but that is about it, considering prisons are over crowded and infested with all sorts of gangs protection is something that very minimally occurs. Violence and intimidation are pretty much a daily occurance and is pretty much a living hell. Trust me jail is no picnic

I think for a 15 year old to already be contemplating the fact of what life time imprisonment is like, as apposed to becoming a productive member of society is a sad state of affairs in and of itself. I hate to say it, but he should never have such a concern at such an impressionable age. If anything he should be well aware of the fact that this is simply a path of self-destruction.

The best way would probably be to show him. MSNBC runs programs all the time from different prisons showing the life inside different prisons and yes its quite hard. I've yet to hear any of them say they like it or it's easy.

Imagine if the Democrats were in power, there was massive gun control so you were completely defenseless, class warfare was supported, and you were left at the mercy of gangs and criminals who wanted to redistribute your wealth among themselves and abuse you.
Then imagine being in a cell instead of on the street.
That's prison.

basicly prison is some one telling you when to get up, when to get dressed, when to eat, what to eat, when you shower(who you shower with), when to go to bed what you can and can't do every minute of the day. It is all the worst parts of living at home, with none of the benefits.
