It's a vitamin D thing. And cats lay in the sunshine because they like the warmth in general. Sunbathing is popular among dogs and cats. Just make sure you let them inside to cool off and get a drink because they can overheat too like we can.

Cats are originally desert creatures, which is why they don't drink very much water. They still love the heat and sun, even after all these centuries of domestication and air-conditioning.

For the same reason my cat likes to lay on my car when I come home...they like the warmth.

they have a higher body temperature, so they feel cold when we may feel warm. they like the heat.
