no, i don't think there ever has been one. / i don't see how animism is godless. spirits who influece your life, are they not gods. Shinto is not a country or civilization.......Japan has had it's share of gods. pure Buddhism has no god, but many sects have made Buddha into a god and/or adopted local tribal gods. but here again, Buddhism is not a country or a civilization. / maybe some, like the Yanamama have/had no gods. or maybe this is just a misunderstanding on the part of translators or whoever.

Yeah, I can. Take the Yanomamo tribe of Venezuela and Brazil, only recently subjected to Western influence.
Prior to their exposure to missionaries in the later 20th century, the Yanomamo's religious belief system included four layers of an afterlife and three types of souls (such as the "animal" spirit- noreshi), but no deity to speak of.
Not to mention Shinto religion. I think there is belief in animism, or spirits in everything, but no god as far as I know. Same for some variants of Buddhism.

Most of the native African and Caribbean cultures have animist religions. They believe in spirits, but not gods.
Many Eastern cultures also have no god concept: ie. Taoists and Theraveda Buddhists in China, or Shinto and Zen Buddhists in Japan.

All people were afraid of the dark and the unknown at one time or another. True atheists live in the light and are studying the unknown to make it known. Care to join us? You are not still afraid, are you?

Early civilizations in East Asia were virtually godless. They had no scripture or formal places of worship. Their faith was more idealogical than religious.
