I don't know. Is there anyone at home, or would you be knocking on an empty door?
If someone were to knock on my door *right now*, and ask if I need someone to mow my lawn, I'd say yes. My lawn needs mowed, and the door knocker is showing initiative.
If he just left a flyer on the door, I'd be likely to throw it in the trash without even reading it, though.
But you can't go by just me. You need to actually *try* it both ways, and find out which way gets you the most customers.

Are the flyers working? I guess not, or you wouldn't be asking.
In addition to leaving flyers, how about posting them around where you can - grocery stores, hardware stores, the gym (be sure to ask first) - that will build up long term business. For immediate business, it can't hurt to knock! For best results, you should know the neighborhood - who's lawn needs mowing the most, who is elderly or unlikely to be able to do it themselves, and start there. Once you have some jobs and the neighbors see what a great job you do, you will also start to get additional business. Ask if you can post a small sign on the lawn -- Beautiful lawn mowed by ... with your number, also.

I agree I would toss the flier. I would think that if you could not take time to knock then you probably would not do a good job with my yard. Then again I work form home so I always hear.
Try a combination of both, that way you've got it covered!
