Our whole house has a "textured" ceiling. We are now installing a skylight and new track lighting in the kitchen. Any idea how to deal with the ceiling where the old (bigger) fluorescent lights were and the box created by the skylight without having to redo the entire house -not sure how this "texture paint" works, how it is applied and worried about matching the existing color (white) ....

I 'm going to strongly suggest that you stay away from texture paints or any kind of roll on textures. They always look bad and like a rolled on texture.

As far as dealing with the boxes in your ceiling, (light wells), you can either insulate and drywall them in, or get creative and turn them into an accent.

If you want, send me a photo or two of this kitchen and your ceiling and I'll help you out in more detail.

Does the kitchen ceiling flow into adjoining rooms? If not, scrape off the old texture and reprime and paint ceiling and skylight box with regular ceiling paint or if you prefer, re-texture to a close color and texture match---it can be done if you get a painter with a good eye for color that can spend a little time tinting....I redid my sisters vaulted ceiling that had a water leak stain on one side and only had to paint the one side of it---took a few tries to get the color right but if you sneak up on the color with tinting, it will be almost invisible to most people. There's a zillion shades of whites out there so take your time---paint some test areas and check the color match when dried from different angles and strong lighting---natural if possible. I'm not even a professional painter but I learned a lot on her painting project.

I would scrape off the old texture, do a light skim coat then do a knock Down finish. You could ad a little paint if you like.Eggshell finish looks best
